Fixed 4x under a hundred and fifty bucks?

So somebody I know who's been out of hunting for years is getting back in, and he mentioned to me the other day that he would like a fixed 4 power scope for his old 30-06 for his hunting trip this fall...the first time he's been out in decades.

"I don't mind spending up to a hundred and fifty bucks or so, I guess," was pretty much what he said to me.

So here's a retired guy living on a pension, looking to get back in to things. Any scope reccomendations for him?

Fortunately, his brother, who he'll be out with, is an avid hunter and shooter, so at least I can be sure he'll be hunting within his abilities and brushed up on his shooting skills.

its the same quality as the Weaver K6 I had, and I loved it. Very nice scopes for the money. Trim, bright, clear, great adjustments, and light. I really like the new Weavers.

I have a couple of K4s bought used ($60 for the older, steel, K4-1, with some kind of range-finding reticle, and a younger K4 Challenger, alloy I think, cost me $50.) They work as they should (as did a couple of K2.5s I've had.) )

I don't think he will find a new K4 for under $150, but they are built to last, so a used one should give good service. I can't think of anything he will find new for $150 that I think would be as well made as a Weaver.

A used 4X Leupold often goes for about $200, sometimes less. That's only $50 more for one heck of a good scope, with a lifetime warrenty.

On Ebay there is usually a few used Redfield Widefields (made in US) fixed four power scopes for about 60 to 90 dollars US. These were pretty good scopes. The Weaver K4's are good too. (Although many of the early ones lack a duplex recticle.) Some of the Bushnell scopes are very reasonable too. I would buy a new one though with these and avoid used ones. Most people who like a fixed 4 power would also like a 1.5 to 4 power zoom. The Bushnell ones of these won't break the bank.

E-bay is not the best place to buy anything. A trip to his local gun shop is in order. He'll likely find something he likes and can afford there.

I've had a k-4 classic on several rifles over the years and its never let me down,I also have a 1.5x5 bushnell trophy thats been a great little scope.Does anyone know if Weaver still uses the center post recticle?

rebe01, no, they don't. According to Weaver's website, all K series and most of their others are duplex reticles. There are a few other variations in other model series, but no post and crosshair.

Well then I guess the post and crosshair K2.5 I was looking at on my friend's gun last week must be a fake then...

EDIT: Ok, I see you mean CURRENT production K series...

Sorry, I might have made that clearer. I used to have an old post & crosshair K2.5, myself. It's my favourite reticle pattern, but I guess it's not popular enough for Weaver anymore.
