Straight 6x was my first scope and it worked fine for most purposes. Was plenty of magnification for the distances I'd be shooting at, and was magnification enough for 300 yards which would be pretty much my limit.
The reason I punted the 6x and went with a 1.5-5 was shooting a moose at 15 feet by looking down the top of the scope, made the shot but would have been much better at 1.5.
I used a 6x scope on a BRNO 601 for many years and changed it to a 8x which seems to work a little better. Didn't have any issues with 6x. 8x is 8x50 where 6x is 6x40
My first white tail was shot at ~175M using a Weaver K6. Great scope, although limited at close range. I swapped out for a Leupold VX-II 1-4X20mm for "snake in the grass" close hunting, and head shot a deer at 30M the next year.
