Fixed magnification vs variable

So I am turning my benelli nova into a strictly slug gun. I am looking for a scope and was wondering what people thought were on getting a fixed magnification or would a variable be better. This will be mainly a bear hunting gun so shots will be pretty close.

Fixed magnification usually means a cheaper, lighter scope for the same quality point, which is a good thing. A 4x fixed scope is adequate for pretty much anything up to 100m I'd think (the C79 sight is what, 3.4x?).

The thing I suggest you look at is the size of the target area for the range you're thinking of shooting. For a bear... about medium pizza size on average, perhaps? Then see what makes you comfortable on a target range, from a standing position.

Fixed is all you need.

In that application I would even consider a red dot.

Definitely fixed for a slug gun. Anywhere from 1x to 4x magnification.

A fixed 2.5x or red dot as previously suggested would be my recommendation for a close range slug gun. 2.5x is plenty for shots up to 100 yards, and will have a wider FOV than a 4x, making it easier to acquire a close target.
