Fixed mod choke... can I use slugs?

I was on the club land this week-end with my redneck single shot 12.ga with fixed mod choke. Had only #8 shot with me and a coyote just stared at me for a good 10 seconds at about 40-50 yards away. I was kicking myself for not carrying a slug in my pockets. That got me thinking, is it safe to shoot slugs out of a mod choke? or does it have to be IC?

If the answer is positive, I'll make sure to carry a slug or 2 in my pockets from time to time

In a modern gun it is safe to shoot a slug out of a modified choke barrel, or even a fully choked one, but accuracy is another story. Try different loads and determine the effective range for your gun and load, then blast the 'yotes.
