So ive had this russian tapco sks for a few years , never had any issues with it been a great reliable rifle.
But now , i bought a crate of that chinese ammo from cabelas because thats all
I could find locally in bulk, didnt think it would be THAT bad..

And the first round gets jammed , a lot, every second mag almost.
It ejects fine , and sometimes just chambers it perfectly.
Never had that happen before, is it just because of the ammo ?
Dirty mags?
Or am i doing something wrong chambering it ?

Never to buy that again ? Anything would help , thanks.

How does it fail to chamber? Stove pipe? Tip hitting the chamber wall? or what?

Are you using detachable mag or the original mag?

I've used surplus from many origins including Chinese, never had any problem with any of them.

It’s mostly magazine related, most feeding issues are. Most times I’ve seen this on the first round was because that first round was not seated properly in the magazine.

If detachable magazines: do you experience it with every magazines ?

Thanks for the warning !!

Hi Mat - Thanks for the warning - I just got a crate (from London) of Chinese - haven't opened yet. I'll do that before I go out tomorrow. Only about $480 tx-shp incl from London... so I hope it's OK. I'll pop the can b4 I go and take a few packs. Hope they're as good as the last few paks I bought. I have a SKS in Tapco that normally shoots about 4-6" with irons. I haven't put a scope on yet. My 'old' 51 had a Cabelas/Barska recvr combo that I had made very accurate, but still only 3" @ 100. Just off a bag.

ADDED INFO -

Just a note here - With my T-mags I always ;slap; them down to make sure they're snug in the back of the mag. I'm guessing a couple mm can make a diff. ** Have you done the mod to 'open' the back of the mag to allow clip-feed ?? If that's not clean it may cause feed probs ??
As DT said, you must make sure mags are loaded 'tight'. And is it ALL mags ?? When I shoot I keep close records of all firing so I can 'Look Back' if needed. I have several mags that are 3+ years old and they need careful attention for FTF etc.

I did try tapping them before loading, the bullet loads about halfway in then the bolt
Hits the casing and it jams, the. I am using detachable mags , i was using barnaul last week
And shot about 150 rounds through and no issue there. Im gonna bring both ammo next week,
And see if the problem persist with barnaul or not.. and yeah its all the mags doing it.

I have never seen nor had any problems with Chinese ammo . as someone else said it's more then likely your mags . the Chinese ammo is made to spec for military or other firearms . do yourself a favor pick up an original sks mag and see if that resolves the issue. I had an sks and hated the detachable mags . I found them to be very unreliable.

Same here, chinese surplus ammo is all I’ve been shooting for a while (last crates I bought were 225$) and never had any issues with stock SKSs or any other 7.62x39 hoses. The lots I’ve fired turned out to be quite accurate for the nature of this ammo (2moa @ 100m with a VZ58 topped with an OKO red dot).

The fact that it jams loading the first round screams magazine issues but I find it weird that it only does it with on kind of ammo. Are you able to shoot all the other rounds without issues or does it jam too ?

Im gonna bring both ammo next week and give it a go, then ill know for sure, just seemed odd that as soon
As i switched ammo it started malfunctioning, could be the mags , ill keep you guys posted on my findings!

So Mathdes - How did your range trip go ? ONe thing I didn't think of before - the Chinese ammo I have are just copper washed cases, while the Barnaul and Russian and Romanian I've used are the 'dark green' cases, likely enamel. Could that make a difference? I used all varieties in my 'other' '51 and also in my current '51 in Tapco with Tapco mags (I have 6 T-mags) and have no probs. I've fired 3-400 rounds of the Chinese so far this Fall.

NYET! Rifle is fine, never jam! Always perfectly good. Drink more vodka and get better komrade! You are problem, not Soviet enough. Drink more vodka, eat beluga caviar. Then try again in two weeks. If that not work, keep communist son of pig ammo away, buy barnaul! Also not use capitalist pig tapco mags, use motherland approved original box mag! Dasvidanya!

Is the bolt hitting the back or side of the case?

Really the only SKS failures of this type that I have witnessed were Technique related, specifically operator riding the bolt home, as opposed to a hearty draw back with a clean release.

While not with an SKS, I had a rifle where the bolt wasn't travelling far enough back and wasn't catching the back of the case properly, instead it was catching the extractor groove or the side of the case which would cause FTF.

The good vodka and the black caviar will cost you a can of ammo. To shoot or to drink - that will be the problem.

SKS' are so overgassed that there would have to be major issues with the gun for the bolt not to go back all the way

Just thinking. If OP did not realize Chinese is corrosive that there could be major fouling of the gas/piston system is.

I had the sks stove pipe the last round when using Chinese’s surplus soft points. Actually would load surplus military FMJ round then the rest soft points are cycled fine. The Chinese ammo is inconsistent and the soft points are rough so they catch the feed ramp. Try different ammo and see what it does.
