I'd like a good 4X fixed scope. My first priority is rugged durability, with optical quality being second. As everyone, I want something very valuable for very little money!

I was looking at the Weaver K4, both new and used, as well as the Leupold FX-II. They make an FX3, but it is only available in a 6X.

What is the best value under, say, $400 or so? Just for curiosity, if you think I ought to spend more, what would you recommend?

It will be used on a deer rifle, typically within 100yds, but potentially out to about 300.

I have several old Weaver K4s, from their made in the U.S.A days. They all work well despite their age and who knows what use they have been through. Newer stuff should be better in optical clarity and light gathering, and of course alloys are lighter. But I doubt if you will actually detect in use that a $400 scope will make you shoot six to eight times better than these old Weavers for which I paid $50-$60.

Having said that, I doubt if you will be disappointed by a new Weaver K4, K6, Leupold FX-II or FX3.

For new, get an FXII. I have picked up a few used Leupold M8 4x on the EE here for $200-$240. They are the model before the FXII, and a great scope for the money...

I have a couple of Bushnell Scopechief VI scopes in 4 power. I find them to be really good scopes if a fixed 4 is what a person wants. They are only available used now. I've picked them both up at gun shows for $100 or less.

Thanks

Many thanks, people. I'm in no great hurry, so will be looking around for a used M8 or K4 for a while. I was going to just get one from Wholesale Sports, but they had none in stock, and said ordering one from another store would take 5 weeks!

Found!

So on E-Bay I won an auction for a Weaver K-4 micro track (whatever that means) that is quite old. Get this - it is new-in-box and has been sitting around a few decades. Apparently the original price was $80 and I paid 73 plus shipping. A good deal, I expect.

I'll copy the description/link below. Does anyone know if this thing could still be expected to be water/fog proof, or if the seals dry up with time?

Thanks

Micro-trac is good. A new old stock K4 for $80 is very good. As I said above, I have typically given $50-60 for used ones and found them to be good value, and I have seen people ask twice that for similar old Weavers and they be getting what they are asking, so I think you have done well.
