I have been having lousy luck with variable scopes lately. I would like to put a fixed power on my .308 hunting rifle. Whats the best bang for the buck. Leup's are just to darn expensive and the word Bushnell leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when I say it. What are my options. All I want is something reasonably clear that will hold zero. And I mean hold it !

I have a 4X Leupold on my .308 that I bought used for $150 at a local gun store. Tthey sent it in to the repair depot for refurbishing at no cost to me. So I got a virtually new scope for $150.

My Partner uses a Weaver scope that he is very happy with.

I only use fixed power scopes on all my rifles.

lots of 4x lueps on the ee for aprox 200. great value. the b&l balfour series are a good buy as well. i have a mix of luep, burris, b&l and weaver fixed 4 and 6. unless your shooting extreme range any of the fixed work great.

Hi

I have a Leupold 6X42 scope. I have had it for over 15 years. It has been mounted on over half a dozen rifles including a mini 14 that broke 2 bushnell scopes. Lots of scratches on the body but it still works great, like the first day I bought it. They are not cheap, but they have excellent glass and they hold their zero. Well worth the money!

you get what you pay for

replacing cheap scopes is more expensive than buying one good one.

my Leupold FXIII 6x42 is worth every penny AND more

I have a couple of Leupold 4X scopes that work great and I keep my variables cranked down to 3X.
Any big game at 200m is easy enough to see with the naked eye and too much magnification cuts down on my field of view. I have dropped Moose on the run at 40m to 50m and it would have been difficult with more than 3X or 4X.
My pick would be a good quality 2.5X or 4X scope and the deciding factor would probably be money.
I like Leupold scopes and if I were to pick another brand one of my criteria would be a lifetime warranty.

Good Luck
John

Honestly, I would hesitate to put anything but a Leupold, or maybe a Burris on a rifle. "Buy cheap, buy twice".

Both Leupold and Burris have "forever warranties", and honour them even if you're not the original purchaser - big bonus. There's no such thing as a perfect scope- I have sent both a Leupold and a Burris back for warrantee work, and received excellent service from both.

If the price of a new one is too much for your budget, look around, and you should be able to find a used one without too much trouble.

I have several Leupold variables, but I think my favourite Leupold is my 6x42.

With optics, probably more than anything else, you get what you pay for.

IOR 4x worked great for me.
I never tried the 6x though.

I love their tactical line. Gives you the chance to forget the range guesstimator at home

Here's another vote for Leupold.I have four fixed power models(older M-8's) and 5 variables (vx and vari-x -1's,2's and 3's).I'd have to say one of my favorites of all is the M-8 4x33.Great little scope and really not that pricey.
Go Leupold and do yourself a favour.

Another big vote for leupold. A friend of mine once told me: "Spend at least as much on your scope as you did your rifle"...at first I thought he was nuts but now I concede how right he was/is.

Again, nothing but leupold on my rifles. The best part is that they have the lifetime guarentee and there is little doubt that you'd be able to take them up on it if required....

Good luck...

Bartell is correct, buy one good scope and be done with it and happy at the same time :D

My fixed 12X M-8 Leupold was excellent, but so are my fixed power scopes from Burris and Khales. It is interesting how one brand name can take control, while another offering equal quality is often over looked.

If you have the pesetas go for Zeiss or Leupold, if not, shop at ebay for a used steel Weaver made in Texas 4x or 6x. Very nice scopes usually for a reasonable price.
