Fixed scope for gophers: 4X vs. 6X

I've been told that some regular scopes don't work well with rimfires, and can even be damaged, because the recoil is "different". I'd like to put my 25 year old Leupold 3-9 scope on my Savage 17HMR heavy barrel, but I'm a bit worried about it.

Any opinions on this?

Ummmm, not quite.

What "doesn't work" is the parallax on centrefire scopes is set at around 150 yards, unless of course the scope has an adjustable objective.

Rimfire scopes are set at a much closer range.

The recoil of a rimfire does nothing to a scope, the person may have confused the rimfire with an air rifle. Magnum spring air rifles will pound most scopes to pieces because they DO have a "different" (two direction) recoil.

i think this has more to do with airguns, i wouldn't hesitate to mount that leupy on your savage.

but if you're that worried, send it to me, and i will put it on my .22 and let you know if it fails:)

Someone has air guns mixed up with .22s. Spring piston guns snap scope around pretty good, but even that doesn't apply to Leupold. Every last Leupold made is rated for airgun use.
