I have always used 3-9 variable power scopes on my .30 caliber hunting rifles. Now I am planning to spend more time at the range shooting a .223 at 100-300 yards. Should I consider putting a fixed power scope on this rifle? What are the advantages/disadvantages of fixed vs. variable?

I went the opposite of you. I placed a quality fixed 6x on my big game rifle, but got way stupid on the magnification on my .223

My reasoning - deer don't like to give you much oppurtunity to tinker with your scope if they step out unexpectantly. So, fast focus and instant acquisition are paramount (to me)

Your .223 is more a target / varminter. A gopher can look pretty small @ 250 in a fixed power scope, but not so much at 25X!

Go with a good variable, that way you can use as much power as the conditions will allow. When the mirage really starts swimming you can turn it down, with a fixed you can suffer.

I totaly agree with a variable on the .223. But keep it simple. There are way too many gadgets out there nowadays designed to suck in the video game generations. If I had to calculate, twist, turn and compute before I took a shot I think I would stay home and drink more...

the only thing with a high power scope is that you'll also see every little movement you make- even off a bench at 18x, body movements like breathing are detectable-and a 223, even with heavy bullets, while legal in some places, is marginal for deer

Those movements are still there whether you see them or not. Some find them upsetting, some realize that you can't hold better than you can see. If it's showing you that breathing makes a difference, it's because breathing makes a difference.
Somebody shooting deer with this thing? :confused:I must have missed that part.

x2 when you power up it will help you to learn to hold better. a variable power is fixed if you dont turn the power knob. I leave mine at low setting for hunting and if something is far out that gives me time to power up if I want. but that is just imo
