Hi guys. Just got back from hunting with my brother and he somehow maaged to gouge the side of a rifle barrel well enough to go right through bluing and give the side of the gouge a nice lip. How would you fix? Just cold blue to protect the exposed metal or try and smooth down the lip?

Its a hunting rifle (though a nice one...savage 114 American Classic). Mostly just wanna protect from corrosion.

Gently peen that 'lip' back down with a small hammer. apply some cold blue (it won't look quite the same) and then keep a bit of G96 Gun Treatment on the metal. (which you should be doing anyway)

I'll just add that sanding and polishing the face of the hammer you use to a fine shine will help with the finish left by the tapping. And it's little "love taps" you want to use to ease the lip back into the gouge. LOTS AND LOTS of little "love taps".
