Just got this at a Auction at the weekend, these are quite rare

What was the doctrine of the day on these guys, flip closed only when not engaged? Very neat stuff 5Th.

Someone mentioned to me once that the air / gas ahead of the bullet would open the flap. Never found out if this was true or not....

Same principal as using finger cotts or tape over the muzzle just more durable.

I wouldn't think so, the flap also block the sight picture. Probably to prevent shooting it.

New Zealand army solution to this problem in Vietnam was a condom over the barrel. Kept the crap out but you could shoot through it. By all accounts worked like a damn. Trust NZ to do it on the cheap.

Likely rare due to too many rifles being fired with the unit in place. Heat of battle, and all that.

The one I have has a hole that was repaired. The hole is about .325" big. Sooooo I would suggest the air opening it is just folklore.
