So, I'm at canadian tires the other day with a friend, and we happen to see those 12ga flares which comes with a pistol to shoot them. After talking a bit about it, I say to my friend as a joke: "Imagine shooting a slug from one of those things lol". After a bit of debating, we came to the conclusion that it should technically be feasable. If the 12ga flares fit in it, and the flares also fit in a 12ga, one would assume the pistol could also be used with 12ga ammo, right?

I admit you'd need to be pretty stupid to try it with a slug, but what about a trap load or something even lighter? Anyone ever tried it?

The news article about the TSE employees selling/stealing guns mentioned flareguns modified to fire shotshells.

No...

That might actually work if you necked it down to a .410 or something. Personally I like my hand far too much to test that out.

Don't have to hold it in your hand to try it, ever seen mythbusters? Nothing some string and duct tape couldn't fix.

But yeah, I do agree with you. Guns are guns, flares guns are flare guns.

That news-bit sounded like alarmist/sensationalist reporting at its "finest"........it probably was an adapter to allow 26.5mm flare guns to fire 12 guage flares.......it's not unlike a Butler-Creek 10/22 magazine being reported as hi-cap mags - technically true, but the description leads one to think something other than the actuality (i.e. an adapter for 12 guage ammo vs. one for 12 guage flares, and hi-cap mags for centerfire ammo vs. those for rimfire cartridges).

somebody google 'chamber pressure' before this kid blows his hand off.

Seriously, it would be revolutionary if all these idiots building guns had been using steel when they could have been using plastic...dang I bet a we's be duck untin wit tis ere flare gun!

"Here's your sign!"

What about firing the flare out of a shotgun? Then you wouldn't have to buy a flare gun.

Never be tempted to fire a flare from a shotgun barrel unless you are in the market for a new one. It has been tried (not by me) and although the flare ignited, it did not exit the barrel. The owner watched as the flare melted the barrel like a roman candle. Result : barrel destroyed.

Flares in shotguns

The flares designed for the Flare Pistols are of an incenedary nature, and not designed for use in a long shotgun barrel. Even when they exit, they leave a very corrosive coating on the inside of your barrel.

There are, however, flares designed to be fired in shotgun and rifle calibres. These were made for emergency uses, such as when you are lost. I can remember seeing .30-30, .303, .308, and 30-06 brass rifle cartridges loaded with flares. Also, 12 guage shotgun shells, BUT THEY WERE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR FIREARMS, NOT FLARE PISTOLS.

The Canadian Tire Store in Brandon, Mb. has a flare pistol package, and 12 guage flares to fit it, but it is made from PLASTIC. I value the use of my fingers too much to even think of firing a regular 12 guage shotgun shell in one of those things.

Some of the Oil Companies here in the West have flare guns available for use in igniting gasses from a well in case of an emergency. The local large storage facility and pumping station here has 12 guage flares.

Being retired, I have a nice interesting part-time job as a land fill attendant, two days a week. It gives me extra income to spend on guns and toys.

Two weeks ago, someone at the Oil facility put some "Outdated" 12 guage flares into the garbage bag, which was then thrown into a burn cage at the landfill. The first one that cooked off went out of the cage, about 50 feet in the air, and landed about 75 yards from the cage, the second went about 30 feet in the air, and about 25 yards away, and the next three cooked off but stayed in the cage.

If someone had been near the cage, or putting something into the cage to burn, some VERY serious injuries could have resulted. Just imagine getting hit in the face or body with a solid 3/4 inch diameter by one inch long chunk of flaming incendidary mixture.

There are flare gun inserts, or sleeves, that allow Orion flare guns to be adapted to fire .38 cal pistol ammunition. According to tests conducted by the ATF, firing these rounds "eventually" leads to the destruction of the flare gun.
