Flares in shotguns
Never be tempted to fire a flare from a shotgun barrel unless you are in the market for a new one. It has been tried (not by me) and although the flare ignited, it did not exit the barrel. The owner watched as the flare melted the barrel like a roman candle. Result : barrel destroyed.
The flares designed for the Flare Pistols are of an incenedary nature, and not designed for use in a long shotgun barrel. Even when they exit, they leave a very corrosive coating on the inside of your barrel.
There are, however, flares designed to be fired in shotgun and rifle calibres. These were made for emergency uses, such as when you are lost. I can remember seeing .30-30, .303, .308, and 30-06 brass rifle cartridges loaded with flares. Also, 12 guage shotgun shells, BUT THEY WERE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR FIREARMS, NOT FLARE PISTOLS.
The Canadian Tire Store in Brandon, Mb. has a flare pistol package, and 12 guage flares to fit it, but it is made from PLASTIC. I value the use of my fingers too much to even think of firing a regular 12 guage shotgun shell in one of those things.
Some of the Oil Companies here in the West have flare guns available for use in igniting gasses from a well in case of an emergency. The local large storage facility and pumping station here has 12 guage flares.
Being retired, I have a nice interesting part-time job as a land fill attendant, two days a week. It gives me extra income to spend on guns and toys.
Two weeks ago, someone at the Oil facility put some "Outdated" 12 guage flares into the garbage bag, which was then thrown into a burn cage at the landfill. The first one that cooked off went out of the cage, about 50 feet in the air, and landed about 75 yards from the cage, the second went about 30 feet in the air, and about 25 yards away, and the next three cooked off but stayed in the cage.
If someone had been near the cage, or putting something into the cage to burn, some VERY serious injuries could have resulted. Just imagine getting hit in the face or body with a solid 3/4 inch diameter by one inch long chunk of flaming incendidary mixture.
