Flare pistol to shoot 12ga ammo?

The 12ga flares I have are made for shotguns. They have a warning only to fire them out of cylinder bore barrels. Tight chokes will lead to a ruined barrel if the flare sticksin the tighter bore and choke.

Yep

Tried one in a full choke, it stuck right at the end. Luckily I was quick enough to save the gun by dunking it in my Rye&Coke. Learned a lesson that night.

What a hilarious thread. I never would have thought of a flare sticking in the barrel and melting it in half but I can clearly imagine it happening now. Thanks CGN for saving my shotgun barrel!

My experience is a tad different than what is stated here but maybe its just cause I'm old...
First off we used to have Cooey shotguns with full chokes as part of standard ignition kits in H2S trailers.
Never had to use one other than to light a flare stack and never, ever had one stick in the barrel.
Every one I've launched has been through a full choke tube and I've shot hundreds.

Cant really say whats sticking those flares in the bore of a 12 gauge.
Maybe you should clean it?

No "fat tony", I wasn't in Sunnyvale, I was in Horsefly...it's by Likely...no BS, in BC.

It was clean. It was an old single shot and the only thing written on it was RANGER. Just had it re-blued before the incedent. Has a long pipe, must be 30" with a full choke. The flares are old, maybe they're the problem. Thought we'd try the old flares out. If alcohol wasn't involved, the barrel would have been seriously damaged!

Cheers Boys!

Most 12 ga flares and crackshells are marked for cylinder choke only.

12 GAUGE SHELL CRACKERS
Exploding with a loud bang at end of travel (approximately 200'), these cartridges are ideal where long range capabilities are required. Use with open choke shotgun only. Also known as Cracker Shells, Bangers, Schreckpatronen, Shot Tell and Twin Shot.

So... why is this another thread that has nothing to do with hunting and sporting shotguns, I thought we corrected that problem!

Since hunters are the ones usually walking in the woods for long periods of time, I imagined they'd be the ones more likely to have a flare gun handy.

Feel free to move the thread if you think it's appropriate.

Oh out come the boo-bears... I thought they only lived out at AO...

Anyway, I got yelled at for creating my own shotgun slug loads. I still have all my fingers. So don't be discouraged. If something can't be done, fine, but don't dismiss it outright without some kind of logical counter-argument.

BUT that being said, I'm fairly certain the flair gun would blow up. Shotgun loads are generally running at around 10500 PSI chamber pressures. I don't know off the top of my head what pressures a plastic flare gun can chamber, but if it is any less than 10500, then a guy would run the risk of blowing the plastic chamber on the flare gun up.

This is easily tested by setting a test gun up on a stand of some sort, tying a long string to it, and pulling the trigger. It's very scientific and what not.

Hell, if someone wants to send me a flare gun, I'll even test it with one of my slug loads and take before and after pictures.

So, I'm at canadian tires the other day with a friend, and we happen to see those 12ga flares which comes with a pistol to shoot them. After talking a bit about it, I say to my friend as a joke: "Imagine shooting a slug from one of those things lol". After a bit of debating, we came to the conclusion that it should technically be feasable. If the 12ga flares fit in it, and the flares also fit in a 12ga, one would assume the pistol could also be used with 12ga ammo, right?

I admit you'd need to be pretty stupid to try it with a slug, but what about a trap load or something even lighter? Anyone ever tried it?

First point: It scares me that you even asked this question.
Second point: Slugs are not higher pressure than most other shells - in fact the cheap econo packs run at higher peak pressure than most slug shells do, the shot size doesn't make a lot of difference.
