I have a surplus military 26.5mm flarepistol that I use as a safety signaling device when boating, and when out in the northern bush. I saw these videos and thought it was a neat idea. My interest is to know if anyone on the forums could make something similar? As you can see from the videos, it's an insert that allows one to shoot Tru Flare Pen Style Flares out of their flare pistol (not out of a pen device). I am interested in this because the pen style flares are cheaper than the 26.5mm and 12gauge flares. If anyone can make me something like this, please PM me and let me know what it would cost (the guy in the video doesn't sell them, thus why I am searching for a machinist on here). I also assume these are legal as it would only shoot flares from a flaregun. However, if I am wrong, please let me know.

Thanks!

I already have a 26.5mm-12 gauge flare adapter. The adapter that I am proposing is an adapter that allows one to shoot Tru Flare Pen Style Flares out of their flare pistol (whether it be a 12gauge or 26.5mm flare pistol). The pen style flares are shot from a pen flare device like this:

I want to shoot the flares from this:

OK, I guess I should have read your complete post... :)
Why not just use the cheap and compact pen launcher?

edit,
Fun project though which is a good enough reason....

Because I already have a flare pistol and would like to improve its abilities by getting an adapter made that opens up the ability to shoot the pen launcer flares. This then would allow me to shoot all types of flares from one device.

Looks like you could make one pretty easily out of good quality spent 12 G shell. Drill a hole and thread it to match the pen flare. You could extend the treads up into the base of the shell if needed with some epoxy putty and use some sort of release agent on the treads of the flare while it's setting up.
You'd probably need to trim the plastic on the fired shell so you could reach in with the flare and thread it in and out easily.

The more I think about it, it is a good idea. One less thing to bring along if you already have a single shot 12G on hand.
I think I have some pen flares around here somewhere....

How high does it go?
How bright is it?
How long does it produce a bright light?

How do the numbers compare to a 12 G flare.

Even the 12 G is marginal, even over open water.
In the woods, nobody in the woods will see anything because of the canopy.
For a search helicopter to spot anything that stays visible for only a short time, is very unlikely.

2 cents Eh!;)

Good idea. I have yet to get any pen flares. If you get this figured out, please let me know. It could prove to be a very fun project.

Actually easier then I thought. There is the perfect amount of meat at the base of the 12G shell. In fact when the flare is threaded in it seats itself flush with the bottom of the brass.
Drilled a 21/64 hole and tapped it with a 3/8" 24NF tap...... trimmed back the plastic hull and voila.

All that remains is to see if the hit from a 12 gauge firing pin will be enough to ignite it.....the pin on the flare guns is pretty big.

The pen flares are rim fire, the 12G ones center fire.

Not a big deal to offset the hole when making an adapter in a lathe, but not gonna work well the way shown. I think.

Try, and see, though.

Cheers

Awesome work Can-down!!!

Trevj, the flares come in both centre fire and rimfire. It all depends on the launcher and the flares purchased. It appears that Can-down has the centre fire ones, which should work in a flare pistol.

You can buy centre fire bear bangers... They was a time when all you could find was the centre fire. I heard it had something to do with the rimfire ones being easy to turn into .22 zip guns, I can't confirm that though.

Well I took one out and tried it......wouldn't ignite.
The firing pin on the center fire pen launcher is quite a bit bigger then a typical 12G firing pin. I've had the bangers for a long time so it's possible they were compromised.
I left the banger at the test site as I wasn't keen on driving off with it only to find out it was a slow ignition! The hit to the primer area was fairly substantial but not enough.
I may pick up some fresh ones and try it in a couple of different single shots and see if I can get on to go but so far it's a fail..... :(

The gun I brought was one of Corwin's backpackers and it does seem to have a soft dropping hammer so I will try another gun and some fresh bangers.... Maple leaf, what's the pin like on your flare pistol and how heavy is the hammer drop?

The silver adaptors are for True flare centrefire flares and bangers. The small adaptor at the bottom is for rimfire Truflares but it is 12 gauge so you have to also use the red 12 gauge adaptor.
