I'm going for specific look. Most likely 12.5 barrel in 15 handguard which would make a kx5 just about flush. The instructions with it say hand tight against crush washer then wrench no more than 1 1/4 turns until writing is level. My question is can I thread on a nut then crush then flash hider if I want a certain portion of hider to protrude from handguard? Will this affect anything at all? Pig is in the mail and I've never installed before but I'm assuming I can shim it out further on threads if I wanted to?

There are actually 1/2-28 lock nuts designed for this purpose, i found one randomly at a gun shop, but i couldn't tell you where to look other than maybe Brownells? Keep in mind you want a certain number of threads contacting or the muzzle device won't be stable, I'd say at least halfway on at least 7 or 8 turns.

OK sounds good thanks. I do want to thread it as much as possible and this may be a non issue but trying to work out some kinks in the design before I start ordering the more expensive stuff

Some muzzle devices are not designed to have a gap between the muzzle face and the inner face of the device, such as SEI vortex.
