My dad and I just got a new Norc M14 from Marstar this week (yay). i ordered gas shims with it and so i need to get the flash hider off. looking at the videos and threads advising how to do this and they all give advice for breaking welds on the bottom of the flash hider, buuut my gun doesnt have welds it has some kind of thread lock on it (like loctite)...

I've loosened the castlenut, and banged on the flash hider with a hammer against a piece of wood, and a wrench that fit over the barrel but butted up against the flash hider all while the barrel was in the vice...no movement :s

i'm sure somebody's gotten the flash hider off of one of the newest shipment of m14's???

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

cheers

If you cant get the flash eliminator off ...A quick fix for the shims is to cut them at a 45 degree angle and then slip them into place without removing the flash eliminator

The welds on some batches are at 4 and 8 o'clock. Scuff the parkerizing with a file to see if the metal is a different colour. I worked on one that chewed drill bits like candy canes. The other way was to grind out the weld with a cylindrical Dremel grinding bit.

Do a search on "removal"
Powmia56 posted a video from one of our clinics a couple years ago. I'd search it but I'm on the road with my crackberry mobile and can't find a search function :( . The welds are well hidden by the parkerizing on the welded versions. Look at the underside under bright light, you may see "halos" in the parkerizing at the welds spots.
I'm surprised to hear ones from the new batch is welded, thee one I have here was not.

Doc honestley do you think Uncle Mao really care's about QC? Some of the new 09's has flash hidders with no flash vents and some are not welded yet some are welded in with vents. Start rolling the dice.
Still I wish if johnone was to read this thread that if he ever does deciede to make a 18.5 inch run for the Canadian market that he tells them to save the money & time and stop welding them on.

Thanks! i just did this and i see a couple halos, theyre really well hidden tho at 4 and 8 o'clock like maple_leaf_eh said. because they were so well hidden (in most pics of other ppl's flash hiders it looks like to tack welds on the bottom but mine looks like nothin's there) i had thought it was held on only by thread sealant..

ill try some of the techniques for getting it off now that i know these are the welds otherwise i may just resort to chalkriver's suggestion.

thanks again for the advice everyone!

So far I have found nothing special about the much anticipated, "best of the bunch, new and improved M305B, It's the same rifle as all that came before with no measurable quality control changes or improvements.
In my opinion for what it's worth, the improvements in QC came with the 2009 import rifles in the form of "slightly" improved sights on some rifles and the headspace average shrunk from average 1.640 on pre 2009's to average 1.636 to 1.638 on the BELL lifestyles imported 2009 norcs and poly's
However, at this price, who cares, still a bargain and a szhitload of bang for the buck
