Flash Hider

I have an old M305 from the mid-nineties I guess (old but barely used - I'm going to change that!). It has a "solid" flash hider. I have two questions.

Is a solid flash hider any less or more effective than an open slotted one?

Can a replacement be purchased or are these parts restricted in some way? It does not seem that my flash hider is welded on. If it is, the weld points are not visible.
 
The xhinese high school shop class kids did a great job of hiding the welds. Yes flash suppressors (even with bayonet lugs) are not hard to import, but there is one on the EE Forum Parts and bits by spcammo for $ 90 right now. :eek: With the evil bayonet lug also! :evil:

So they are not restricted at all.... Easy to replace. :)

Yup knock it off with a steel bar n hammer or slightly drill the welds an then knock it off, easy as pie.Then ya can get to the gas assembly as well to shim or weld it up ;)
An if ya get the chance take in one of Barney's clinics ,I highly reccomend them you'll learn all sorts on neat little tricks for on the cheap to boot hehe.

Yes, I plan to attend a clinic in February.

Apart from access to the gas assembly (which may be reason enough), is there any other reason to replace it? The suppressor itself looks fine; that is, true to the barrel. I was wondering if slotted suppressors somehow work better. It seems to me that a solid suppressor would be more effective at burning gases without any visible flash.

If you are a real man (like me :D ) ha ha ha ha.... No seriously, I really like to have that bayonet lug present since that is how the rifle is issued when I competed NRA High Power. Back in 2002 when the first few nicer Norincos began their wave of popularity, that neutered Kalifornia flash suppressor drove me bananas so I swapped it out the first chance I got.

If you like the solid look then by all means Have at 'ER! :) Leave it alone.

Download the 2004 Skullboy/Hungry clinic from the Sticky(ies) section at the top of this forum and listen for the flash suppressors being removed in the background. It's during the section where I'm rebarreling some M14 rifles. You can hear the hammering in the background. Sounds like a blacksmith's shop. :evil: Lots of laughs!

Thanks all for your help and suggestions. I think I will replace it with a slotted hider, they look better imo. But I'll wait for a clinic.
