Experience required ... in 308 riles like the M14 or AR10, do flash hiders provide some/all of the same benefits of a muzzle break? As most of the rifles seem to come with a flash hider, when / why does one opt to switch to a muzzle break? Are there general rules of thumb for selecting either a new flash hider or muzzle break from the many styles available? Where can I find more information?

Your wisdom is appreciated ... cheers!

A flash hider just disrupts the muzzle flash. It doesn't do anything for the recoil or muzzle jump. Which one you have doesn't make any practical difference.
A muzzle brake redirects the gases, usually up and back a bit, to reduce the muzzle jump and felt recoil. Not that there is much felt recoil from either an AR10 or an M305/M1A/M14. A brake does increase the muzzle blast and noise for the shooter and anybody close to him. Some brakes do that more than others, but one work's pretty much the same as another

If you're rapid firing, like say in a 3 gun match, you want a muzzle brake as it will reduce muzzle rise and give you faster follow-up shots. A flash hider, on the other hand, will simply reduce the amount of perceiver flash from the muzzle in ow light conditions. this is what you'd want if you were shooting at someone who might shoot back.

In Canada, unless it's for looks, go with a brake.

Of the two, a brake gives you more tangible benefit. BUT a brake also tends to vent the gas (and sound) upwards. In open air, it may not matter but in a firing line with a roof above you, you and others beside you will feel the unpleasant blast.

They make 4 different type's and they are, M1 Grand, M14 (castle nut needed), AR10's thread pattern & AR15 thread pattern. All availible for export. Only Flash hidder's need a end user certificate.

I'm looking for the AR10 style. Do you know anyone / company that would ship to Canada? Most sites seem gunshy to ship internationally.

Brownells or contact Rick @ Albeta Tactical and see if he has 1 in stock or can order you in 1. Plus I think Wolverine can get them 2 but I am not 100% sure though.

Hmmm, wondering if there is enough meat to thread a M14S barrel 5/8 x 24. I'm thinking it is close. I should have checked that before ordering the Smith 308 break. It does come with a lock nut, and would not need a shoulder to seat against.
