Flash Hiders: VLTOR vs VORTEX

So I know there's another flash hider thread right now, but thats really about compensators.

I'm looking at something to put on a Tavor. So yes, I will be shooting in lower light out in the bush, through a magnified scope. I don't want my image to get washed out. I'm not worried about "keeping pressure" or "increasing pressure" or anything like that, because I'll have the full 18 inch barrel, but it will be closer to my face than an AR.

I have to agree with Greentips regarding the muzzle pimples recently. The SPEX or Alberta Tactical units, while very effective, just aren't my cup of tea. I'm much more interested in the AAC style flash-hiders and other styles closer to the original A2 hider. (AAC makes the vortex style correct? they're one and the same? I'm pretty sure that's right.)

I'm curious if anyone has had experience with the VLTOR flash hider. It's also slim, looking sort of like a birdcage, but advertises itself as a compensator and flash-hider.

Does it still eliminate flash as well as a vortex setup? Any advice would be super.

I will also looking into PWS Triad since it is readily available. Those 3 or 4 prongs design like vortex, blackout, Myer....they are pretty much proven.

I believe there are youtube videos out there that compare the vltor to the other muzzles devices.

Yeah the Vltor is a cool look, but having read that military morons review (great site) I think I'll start researching the PWS Triad.

A friend of mine has a vortex one that he's willing to sell me for $80. Sounds worthwhile judging by some of the prices I've seen on the EE. But it lead me to another question:

These things don't burn out do they? It sounds rediculous to me, they're just a metal cage. But they're being subjected to some gas and pressure still. Barrels burn out, suppressors burn out. Should I be cagey about buying a used one?

Vortex are known to "open up" after heavy sustained full-auto fire but we're talking about at the very least 6-8K+ rounds which nobody here (except for people in CF) has done with their AR.

A good quality flash suppressor should last a very long time. You will eventually get some erosion of material but I suspect a good flash hider would easily last as long as the barrel.

But....if you don't clean it properly performance will degrade. Unburnt powder and filth will accumulate in them and can actually accentuate flash.

Ok well explain to us why they would produce a special G6A3 version that's super hardened to a Rockwell hardness of 54? It's no longer listed on their website but you can see a related posting below.

What good is heat treating a device for hardness that will see temperatures in excess of tempering temperatures under sustained auto?
