Does it really make much of a difference? Just piece of mind? I did some .223 tonight and some had quite a bit taken out and others almost nothing.
 
Unless you're doing it in conjunction with weighing and sorting and outside neck turning for absolute best accuracy from a rifle , KDX, I don't think it does a thing on it's own.
I used to shoot 10,000 + CF rifle rounds a year and half the time I wouldn't even clean primer pockets.......neck size-prime-load-go. A lot of the time I never lubed cases either, but that bad habit caught up with me. The critters I shot never noticed the difference though.
None of these processes hurt your accuracy, for sure, but neither do they necessarily help it in a standard weight sporting rifle.
My point is that we COULD do a lot less prep work and still end up with perfectly functional and accurate ammo. My motto used to be "minimize loading time - maximize shooting time", you don't get to be an outstanding shooter sitting at a loading bench, chamfering flash holes, weighing brass and turning necks.
I would challenge a bunch of you guys out there to take a known sporting weight rifle and load that shoots a consistent group of 1" or a little less and try this with it;

Take some fired but as yet unprocessed, in any way, brass.
DO NOT trim.
Run it through the sizer and only partial size for 3/4 neck length.
DO NOT clean primer pocket, or tumble or anything else !!!
Quick wipe off lube (if used) with rag and prime.
Take your known load and set up thrower and THROW (do not weigh) 20 loads.
DO NOT chamfer neck inside or out, seat bullet to known overall length.
DO NOT check COAL after setting up die and seating first bullet.

Now go out and shoot groups with these 20 "SLAPPED TOGETHER" loads and tell me if you can measure a difference in groups.
This is exactly how the factories do it (except for dirty primer pockets, and they don't seem to matter) and I have seen numerous rifles shoot well under 1" with factory ammo lately.

I think you will be surprized !!!

This is how I used to load for a long time, and I killed more by 10 times than I missed, and this includes shooting out to 400+ meters on crows, gophers, jackrabbits and badgers and anything else that moved and caught our attention.
 
I also believe it won`t hurt but you need a firearm capable of less than .25 moa to see the difference. The bench rest boys say it is a must but they also sacrafice small animals and goats to improve their groups.:D You won`t see the difference in the average deer rifle unless there is a burr the size of Sksavengers butt.

That offends me slightly.....but not as much as the fact that you still have not saw the light and bought a Savage :D
 
Once you have the deburring tool it cant hurt to get some mileage out of it. I am routinely surprised on the inconsistency in burs on bulk brass. I found that once you match prep brass for a target rig...your hunting rigs follow quickly there after. Where you have the time on your hands of course:)

I deburr the flash holes on all new brass. It's just one step in the prep/inspection process, If there is an oversize hole or no hole at all, i want to know before i seat the primer.
 
I don't think it makes all that much difference in the normal state of affairs, but I've seen some brass with more than half the hole blocked by brass crud. So I'm with JJ-65 and deburr all new brass just as a matter of course. It's like chicken soup for colds - can't hurt, might help. I certainly don't bother doing it over and over.
 
The sum of all the small things you do in case prep "tends" to add up in the long run. But I think it all depends what the firearm is designed to do in the first place.

In a standard hunting rifle, you may
Notice very little difference.
In a long range tactical rufle you will "probably" will notice a difference.

The biggest difference it WILL make , is it will give some shooters more confidence in thier shooting rig. If you have confidence in something, you "Tend" to do better with it.

I know I do it because I like to control the variables as much as I can, and minimize how much the variables control ME.

Thanks for all the replys. As I tend to try to get as much accuracy out of my rifles as possible without going totally anal about it, I think I'll stop at this step.
 
Probably not necessary like others have said, but I do it anyway. Doesn't take long and I got into reloading to produce the best possible ammo I could, so why not follow all the steps to keep everything consistant?
 
At least peek in the hole to make sure it is indeed round and clear.

Me I don't even check .... That being said I have a contingency plan which was actuall part of COA 2 in my estimate.

I have a Hornady LnL AP. If your familiar with this press you'll know that priming takes place in station two which is on the down stroke. In station one I use a Lee Universal Decapping die to clear out the flash hole before priming. Which really doesn't make a difference as it would just be an otherwise unused station.
