Does this procedure make a real noticeable difference in the firing of a reloaded cartridge? I've have read and seen some reaming that makes the inside of the flash hole look like a funnel, what can be gained from doing this, speed, firing-time?
not to mention that fouling in the pocket could cause insufficient primer seating which could actually leave the primer surface exposed higher than the back of the shell. not good
People will argue whether or not there is a benefit to primer pocket uniforming and flash hole deburring, I do both because you only have to do it once and I figure it can't hurt to do it since it eliminates a variable. Then you will get the people who only use Lapua brass because the flash holes are drilled and not punched (which leaves a burr on the inside of the case) like in most other brands of brass, but once you deburr the flash hole what is the difference. If you have a drill you are laughing, once you set the depth stop on the deburring tool you can deburr a brass every few seconds and the same with the primer pocket uniformer.
Thanks for the info boys. I usually tumble my brass without the primers, so I guess while popping them out it would'nt hurt to fix up the flash hole too.
You don't need to ream the crap out of the flash-hole to the "funnel" like condition you noted. Just remove any burrs on the inside of the flash-hole and thats it.
I did'nt think that a full ream was neccessary, I was of the feeling tha simple smoothing the edges was sufficient, besides, I don't have the time or patience to go that extra mile, The only tiem I recall using something of this configuration, was when I bought some "hot-shot" nipples for my muzzleloader, they were funneled and did produce a better ignition, but you put the nipple on and it stays as is till it is replaced, not funneled every time.......what a pain.
