Flash Suppresor vs. Muzzle Brake

Hey Fellas,

Been looking into replacing the "faux" (non milled out) flash hider on my 2009 Polytech and am someout confused with my options. What is the consensus (if any) as to the best replacement? Any leads on where to acquire said replacement would be appreciated too.

I realize that a flash hider is designed to hide a flash (seems somewhat self explanatory) and that a muzzle brake is designed to reduce recoil.. What I'm confused about is if a muzzle brake will also act as a flash hider? Are there any out there that accomplish both?

Pardon my noob question, but if you dont ask how do you find out?

well, most break's I have experienced tend to make a more entertaining fireball, but dont reall "hide" it. Really tho, a good break would be more usefull then a flash hider. Unless you plan to shoot a lot in the dark and need to save your nice vision lol
 
So have you given thought to your front sights after you remove the original...These brakes use the original front sight setup...and if you reuse your original castle nut they will easy to mount...I bought the top one from Brownells for my shorty project...I plan on getting the inside rethreaded and mounting it after the chop job.

I believe it will be over the 100 dollar limit that is why I bought the top one ... (made by springfield armory) but contact them and see.... I think alberta tactical may also sell the SE Navy break if I remember right

I was under the impression that it was a 100 dollar limit to Canada as well but I could be wrong ...sorry if I gave the wrong info... It is best to contact them and find out for sure
 
I just found a 'smith that had spare flash hiders from doing "shorty" jobs: easy, cheap, simple replacement.

Some people get the barrel cut to 18.5 inches and don't want their flash hider back: that's how I got mine. The castle nut, set crew and front sight were all interchangeable. :)
 
that smith enterprises brake is awsome. scored one for my m14. the gun hardly recoils and stays on target for the next shot.

Sorry, but for the most part you can't find one that will act as both. The design of most muzzle brakes tends to cause ignition of secondary flash, which is the primary source of visible radiation of the muzzle flash phenomena.

Please remember that with a muzzle brake you may get a reduction in felt recoil but you will also get a lot of muzzle blast with some designs. Some people find it irritating, especially when shooting for groups.

There's really no down side to a flash hider, with the exception being that most civilian users will never need them for their intended purpose.

A good compromise would be something like the LeVang comp (not sure they make one in 7.62) or the new TROY Claymore, which directs muzzle blast down range and may theoretically improve accuracy in some rifles.

Best of all, they make one in 7.62.

anyone know of a supplier of the navy break hear in Canada? I sent off a msg to A.T.S and brownells, still waiting to hear from them. I want one in the worst way:)
 
a gunsmith friend of min manufactures his own copy of the navy break. ive got one on my 18.5 inch barreled M14, it works great and looks the same as the navy break. ill post a pic of the rifle in the short barreled M14 thread so you can get a look at it
 
Thanks for the replies. I guess it was too much to ask for one to do both jobs.

Does anyone know of a front sight that is not integral to the hider and/or brake and not designed for a shorty (i.e. one that mounts to the bbl) Then I guess one could have a hider and a brake and thread on whatever the situation dictated. hmmmm

or maybe another pipe dream...

2 options;
#1) I didn't like because I had issues when I took on and off my gas assembely when cleaning my rifle but some might like it. It's called the "Bit's & Piece's Gas Lock Front Post Sight";

you might get lucky with the coast guard smith ent brake from brownells.... as the export ban is on flash hiders , not muzzle brakes...... but then ITAR comes into play if the part is deemed military technology.... then all bets are off.
I think ATRS no longer carries the smith ent stuff but i could be wrong. There was a dealer who was to start selling smith ent items in canada...... but no news on that yet.
 
Two more possible options:

1) Smith Enterprise direct connect California compensator and gas cylinder lock front sight

2) Smith Enterprise threaded front sight base and M1A SOCOM kit muzzle brake
