Thanks to some predators at night I need to add a flashlight to my 870. I was looking around online at universal clamps or possibly replacing the forestock with one with a rail. Anyone use one of the universal clamps? Will the barrel rib be in the way? Should I remove it when target shooting? The ones I've seen are made of plastic anyone think it would melt? I don't get my barrel glowing but sometimes its 50-75 shots consecutively. I use my 870 for hunting/clays. Another option I thought about was buying a shorter barrel to use for predator control, adding the universal clamp and flashlight, and then swapping them out as needed.

Opinions? Suggestions?

The forends are around $40 or less , the rails are like 5-6 bucks and I've had the light and clamp so long that I don't recall how much they were or who I got them from.
You could also use any pistol light and mount it on the 3 , 6 , or 9 o'clock position.

Just a warning though , if you get the forend you'll want the stock too.lol
 
Ya. Thanks lol, can't just get a flashlight. Now I'm searching stock kits. The place you suggested has a nice sling/flashlight rail that fits between the forestock and the cap. That would maintain the gun pretty much stock. Also found one that's a pistol pump with a rail. Too many options…… now I gotta think about how much cabbage I want to dish out. I didn't realize how expensive the flashlights can be.

12 gauge recoil will eat cheap flashlights though, id recommend the inforce wml
 
The Streamlight 69906 rail adapter is the simplest cheapest most reliable solution I've come across. It allows you to keep your existing forend, and allows putting the rail in three different positions. It's very easy to mount and unmount as required.

Then, you can go with a WML that mounts directly to the pic rail on the above adapter (I use a Streamlight TLR-1s), or get a handheld light and a pic rail light mount (I use a Streamlight ProTac HL in a Viking Tactics Light Mount). Cheap and effective, and then you can move the mounted light from shotgun to AR with minimum fuss.

DEFINITELY spend on a solid light for use with a shotgun. Decide how much light you want, and then choose WML or handheld (and also switch type!). Handheld is more versatile, but requires an adapter for mounting of course. For predators etc., I wouldn't bother with anything less than an excellent quality tightly focused 500 lumen+ light. A quality light will last for years, but be prepared for the fact that LED tech is evolving VERY quickly, and this year's high-end light will be pretty forgettable (but still effective) in two years time. Oh, and don't forget battery type as a factor.
 
I decided to instal a double bulb sensor light with 100w bulbs and 1500 lumens. Going to instal a second set so I will have 270deg of light around the building. Temporary hydro out there for now. We will see how that works tonight.

I went on the GG&G site but they don't ship here?? I think I will see if I can source that bracket locally and help put some money into a local mom and pop shop. That's for the light and bracket suggestions! I will post up what I eventually install on the gun.
 
I went with a CDM mod C clamp. Got it from SJ hardware, but dunno if they have it in right now

Maybe you've already found a mount, but if not have a look at NEBO mounts. I just picked one up, and I am pleased with it so far. It attaches and detaches without tools, and works via a clamp device.
