I am a big fan of Backfire , but
He really advocates the square forend stock instead of the roundish . For diff reasons
That leave's alot of rifles out in the cold ?
Actually degrades rifles with such features and even more so if they don't sport a pistol grip design

Flat forends are a moot point IMHO. Absolutely pointless on a hunting rifle, as they will fatigue your hand. Even target shooters will use supports of some kind, so it makes no sense to have it flat. Very few people I know rest the forearm directly on a hard surface. If using sandbags, you can literally seat the stock in/on the bags. Why have a flat forend if you are using a bipod, tripod or whaterver…. Chassis rifles are designed for comp and have flat edges everywhere. You can buy “wings” to extend these flat surfaces, but again only practical if shooting off flat surfaces in the first place. Benchrest shooting is the only practical purpose I see for flat forends. This drives me crazy, as most tactical stocks have this flat bottom or extremely wide, beaver tail forend. It’s not needed! I like to carry my rifles. Most are carried more than shot, because I’m a hunter. It’s personal preference, but few stock makers these days are making rounded or oval forends.
 
I have several examples of both, doesn't make any difference as long as you practice with it and are comfortable.
Last thing going through anyone's head when it's time to take that shot is "hmmm I wonder if a round or flat stock is better?"
They mostly all point and shoot the same.
2 Parker Hales, one 6.5x55 and one 30'06, the 30'06 has that weird flat tapered foreend, the Swede has a more typical Schnob foreend, the grip/butt is something I pay more attention to, forend doesn't do much except give my offhand something to prop up lol.

I'm not sure there's any point in answering this, as the OP got perma-pinked ( spruster in disguise ) but flat forends are for target rifles. They're fine for shooting off bags, but they're awkward and uncomfortable if you're in a situation where you actually have to handle your rifle.

As for pistol grips, if what is meant by that are the AR style hang-down style, after a lifetime of handling "normal" grips I find them completely foreign; my muscle memory wants to bring my grip up higher, and I can't get used to the other.

One of my pet peeves are grips on rifles with too tight a curve. An early pre-64 winchester would be an example; it forces your hand too close to the trigger unless you have very small hands. The grip should be much more open, so your finger falls naturally with the tip of your finger ( from the first joint forward ) resting on the trigger.
 
For shooting off the bench at the rifle range, I perfer the square/flat forend. They hold steady on the front rest, whereas the round dosen't. For hunting, I like them both, flat and round.
