After 200 yrs in the ground, any surface details will be gone. If there are no markings, what is the provenance? Was it found in a fur trade area, or strictly agricultural? Any other items accompanying?

It is about the right size and style to be the lock from a Chief's Gun. War of 1812 period.
Locks that size were made in large numbers and used in various guns or sold as detached locks for use by gunmakers.

Morning Gents and thank you very much for your interest and responses. The lock was gifted to me awhile back and it came with a relic Bess bayonet.
I have sent off an email asking the fella that sent it if he recalls any details it's history. I will post as soon as I hear from him. Meanwhile it will sit with the rest of my relics and pieces. ☺

Stay safe and thanks again for the interest

ps: Chief's Gun -- that would be quite interesting
