Here's a few pictures of a recoil pad job I did over the weekend. Local sporting goods store was closed, and I didn't have a pad that would fit a stock I was working on, so made one out of one of a pair of Flip Flops. Yes, the things you wear on your feet! :D

I had read about this on another site a few years ago, and just figured Why not? :)

First, the butt was rounded, so had to sand that flat. Then cut out a piece of the Flip Flop that was about 1/4" bigger than the butt, all around.

Mixed up some Acraglass, applied it to both the pad and the wood, let it set for a while to penetrate, and then glued them together. Tied it all up with parachute cord to keep it under pressure, and put it in the furnace room while the epoxy set up.

Here's what it looked like immediately after I removed the cord,

and what it looks like after sanding it down. Have a small touch up to do on the wood.

I know it's hard to believe it's really a flip-flop, so here's another picture!

The pair of flip-flops cost $2.99! :)

Have a good day, my friends!

Well, friends, it works quite well. Hard to believe, but if you didn't know it was a flip-flop, it's hard to tell it from a regular Pachmyar or Uncle Mikes pad. Weighs close to four ounces less than a regular recoil pad, too.

That got me to wondering how it will stand up, then it occurred to me.......they are built to sustain the beating of at least a couple of thousand steps under your average North American, and what's that 150-300lbs?

The 9.3X57 will only load it to 25 lbs or so with each shot. :)

Necessity is the mother of invention, that is great Ted.
Ooooo that little touch in the stock is going to remind you
of your experiment, I hope it wasn't a very valuable rifle.

You know, this pad works so well, I'm going to do another one, on a lightweight 270. Hasn't budged a bit, and actually tames the recoil quite well.

Who would have thought it?

Yes Ted, it would be a crime to waste the second flip flop! Thank you for excelent idea. By, by $40+ comercial ripoffs....

Just a quick update. The pad has survived many, many, rounds on the 9.3X57 just fine. Have had two other people shoot it, one of them a young 22 yr old gal, with nary a whimper.

The guy who tried it wants to take it moose hunting next week. :D
