Tried searching as I know a thread about this exists already but I seem to suck at using the search function on this forum.

I've almost finished building my first AR. Just dawned on me that I still have a ways to go $$ wise as I don't have any sights for it either. I'd like to get a set of good flip up sights just so I can try it out while I put aside some more money for good optics and once I have the good ones, naturaly I'd like to keep the flip up as a backup.

What do you recommend for flip ups?

And once I have the money, what would be some good entry level optics for it? I honestly don't know what's avaiable so open to any and all suggestions. I don't think I could justify a lot more than $500.

Magpul MBUS are probably the most afordable flip up sights. Honestly I wouldn't spend a whole bunch of money on BUS since you will likely never use them once you get an optic. If you are looking for a red dot in the future aimpoint pro would be a good option under $500.

Knights Armament Company flip up front and rear sights. I will never use anything else. Had the ARMS 40, it was okay. Troy seems popular... I try to keep Magpul off my rifles (except the CTR stock which I like). There's a reason SOCOM uses KAC BUIS's instead of their competitors. LMT Fixed Back up sights are solid too.

I would just go with Magpul flip up's, they are cheap and light weight. If you were going to use them more regularly afterwards maybe spend the money on some more expensive ones but I never use mine.
For an under $500 optic I would go with a Hi-Lux CMR from Wolverine. For $400 I don't think you can beat it for clarity and having zero-stop turrets and a sweet illuminated reticle.

Again one more vote for the Magpul's. For the amount I've used them in the last two years I don't need high cost metal sights. Like the name says, they're back up sights in case I lose my red dot.

Another vote for KAC, I've got the 600m and if you plan on using them as a primary I'd use nothing else. If you pick a red dot that can cowitness later on that money will not be lost; you could still use them through it and as they are adjustable for range, they might come in handy taking the guess out of a 400-600m shot.

+1 on the kac sights. Lots of $$ but they really are worth it.

KAC 300m flip up. Have had magpul and ARMS, no problems with either.
Prefer the KAC, 150.00 from Farmboy.

+7 for the win!!

I have the Magpul MBUS pro sights and they are very nice. They seem accurate, are small, well made and zero without the need of tools. I honestly like them better than the Troy Battlesights they replaced.
