I got out this morning for the first morning hunt of the season.
5 C and a light breeze. Set up a half dozen decoys, and had agood morning, but only average as far as the birds were concerned.

There were no flocks of mallards buzzing about, no constant honking of geese, just the few locals that I stirred up.

I did however have one encounter with aproximately 27 geese.
I was in the cattails, and gave my call a few honks. Well somehow, from somewhere, i saw a flock coming straight for me. I put away the call, and got ready. I was not seen first nor last and chose when I would reveal myself.

I was picking out two geese to hammer, and was as excited as hell. Straight ahead 25 yrds high, about to fly over me like jumbo jets. At the last second I jump up, BANG ! pit pit pit pit pitp pitpt, I hear and see the pellets tear at the goose, but he keeps comimg. Bang ! pit pit pitpitpitpiit[[t I hear and see thge feathers ruffle, still nothing. My last shot is now leaning backwards at full stretch, and BANG! pitpit pita pita pit pit pit, right in the belly.

I watched him fly on with the rest , climbing high for about a kilometer.
The shells I used were the cheap 3 inch winchesters. I had used them before, and thought they were OK for early season. Never again.
I shot a teal with one just earlier, and after 3 shots, he was still going as well.

I loaded in some kent, and a soon had my limit.
I know those winchester's are OK and i have used them before, but I don't know what it is with this gun, but they perform the ####s. I went and patterned with Kent and Federal, and couldn't believe the difference over the winchesters.

Any how, here a few pics, and a vid on the floatin' jigger someone else was interested in.

This floatin' jigger is not a great one, well it works, but I have had better. My pop gave me a real good one that i lost. I kept it in a tobacco can in my back pack so it wouldn't catch on stuff.

Oh yeah, I got caught up to my knees in mud taking in decoys with no gun, when 5 mallards dive bombed me. !!!!! Some will say i should have had my gun with me, ...
I'v efallen in too many times with rubber boots stuck in the mud to risk it!

Back in my college days I used to do the same thing but with my musky gear. I would be armed with my 12ga in one hand and a big topwater plug on my rod in the other! Worked mighty fine and got my dinner back to me! Great pics and report!

I believe you posted that you had picked up some of those winchester shells as well. I've used them for the past 3 years.

I shoot a different semi each fall. For early season, every gun I used patterned fine with them, except this one.

I have an 1187 that uses them fine as well, but I don't take that one out anymore (cleaning cleaning cleaning)

Not sure what to think.
But I know the kent and Fedrals are working great out of it.

I had the same thing happen a few years back with Winchester Dryloks. I had two geese flying at me as I was walking to another spot. My gun only fired 2 3/4" and I had it loaded with #2's. As they came closer, I dropped on my back in the grass and they flew right over me. I let the first shot fly and saw the pellets impact the feathers on the first bird. I pulled the trigger again on the second, but the action wasn't finished cycling, and when I did fire, the same happened, feathers moved but no noticable effect. Well that's not true. One did crane it's neck down a bit to see what was going on. :p

I have done this my whole life on both Atlantic and on fresh water.
I was mainly an upland hunter with a Grodon's and English Setters who would I would not dare let go in the North Atlantic in the Middle of february.

My dad had a flating Jigger that his dad gave used to use, and I guess it just kept on...

It's good to keep a few things from your heritage alive. So many thing get lost, forgotten, etc..
