i was just watching some videos about glass bedding and came across several that talked about removing some material in the stock to turn the rifle into a floating barrel rifle. im curious if anyone has done with with a remington 700 sps, and what the cons are to doing this? i know the pros of it and realistically as long as i dont sand down the furthest mounting screw on the stock closest to the front i dont see any negative effects to it.

The area you want to remove is the pressure points at the front of the stock where they touch the barrel, the only problem is the SPS stocks are a little flimsy. So you must glass bed them around the recoil lug atleast!

i was doing some reading on glass bedding and some people were saying the sps stocks dont take well to bonding with the epoxy in the glass bedding. any thoughts on that?

Ideally you would want to get a new stock before bedding it. The SPS stock is the weakest link in that rifle and as you heard doesnt take to bonding well. Roughing it up can help and there is probably a bonding agent you can get to add to the resin when you bed it but you are still going to have a flimsy stock. There are lots of options in various price ranges for 700 stocks I would check out first.

You must under mine the lug area and rough up the surface where the bedding material is applied, I have personally done 2 of my SPS's and my VTR plus 4 other rifles for friends and all had good gains with no bonding issues, just get the prep work on the stock right.

good to know, thanks for the help guys. as with anything its all in the prep.

ive looked into better stocks. and for fun looked at one of those ###y aics 2 stocks and the price blew my mind. any suggestions for something in the couple hundred dollar range or cheaper?

There was a HS take off stock from a 5R on the EE, your best bet if you don't want to spent too much.

youre right, im gonna end up getting one used. i looked through google for some, and even basic looking stocks are like 500 bucks. nothing fancy to them.

Look up a Bell and Carlson. They came on some 700s so you might find more of them around used. But even new they are often in the $200-300 range. Check here:

Not sure on their shipping to Canada but just to give you an idea.

I have the HS stock still on my 5R and it's definately a lot nicer than the sps ones. in my opinion. Probly the best inexpensive choice that you'll find.

bedding the remington 700 sps

Hey all I have used Devcon epoxy to bed two of my remington rifles. I have no problem with the Devcon bonding to the stock as long as the stock has been de-greased well. I used pure alcohol and seemed to work real well. Right the stocks are cheaply made and flimsy. I havent had a chance to shoot the rifles yet but I hope it works.
Thanks
