i am in the process of setting up my range, it runs along the side of a large slough, i am going to put up berms for my steel gongs and target boards. but would also like to incorporate some type of a floating target for on the water. anyone out there done such a thing or have any ideas on what i could do??? obviously it would have to stand up to multiple impacts without me accessing it. i dont want to be going out there in a canoe every hour resetting or fixing it. the slough is fairly shallow and i thought about running some posts in the ground and hanging steel off it, but i and not sure how solid the bottom is and think it may just tip over in the soft bottom, also when the ice goes out in the spring it may wreak havoc with anything permanent. before i get flamed about shooting at water i will say there are no houses or roads for 2 miles behind said slough, nothing but swamp and trees. thoughts??

Why don't you try building a rudimentary catamaran with two large blocks of styrofoam strapped to the bottom a wood pallet or something similar. I would then get some AR500 steel for a gong or just build a large enough target that you can shoot at several different areas on it for group sizes or whatever without feeling the need to change the target after 20 shots

If you sourced out some pipe , it could be capped and a frame mounted in between with what ever you wanted , If you need some welding done let me know

. Other than water snakes muskrats and beaver what else would a guy shoot in water providing the regs allow it. I am thinking water targets should mimik whatever a guy would shoot in water. Painted floating sticks of various sizes would work great, Tie a rock with binder twine to them, and you never have to collect them. You could have them all over the place. To have a standard target just out over the water, is nothing more than job creation as its much easier to service them over land.

Water will skip a bullet, and you will have no idea where it's going.
For safety sake avoid the water portion of your range.
Bill

Most bullets will come apart when they hit the water. We were taught to believe a bullet shot at water, loses little energy and is a danger to the world, truth is most enter the water, or come apart on impact, its the slower 22 bullets that are often the worst offenders for riccochet and not far at that.

I've seen some interesting things done with pallets stuffed with styrofoam and a light weight target hanging above it. The target was like a radar reflector so it could be seen regardless of what direction it faced. Didn't sink like the tire/rim ones!!

Hey Steve, here's a thought. Depending how shallow the water is you could put a round straw bale in the water (on it's side) and drive a few poles into the bale and hang your targets from that. I'm sure you know someone close by that could sell you a large round straw bale.

Its gonna cost me a small fortune just to build all the berms let alone an island!! Seriously though there are no islands so that is out. The bale idea may work, i do have a couple hundred hay bales in the field at the moment
