So I have a Sako kodiak 85 in 375 H&H, its a good shooter and this rifle is a keeper. I've never been a fan of the detach mags on any rifles, tikka, Remington. Most get sold off after 1 or 2 years. I tried a search and haven't really found an answer. I like the old school floor plate style, I think it adds a little timeless class to a hunting rifle. I'm hoping someone here might know of a stainless floor plate bottom metal kit available.

I'm just not a fan of detach magazines, this rifle is the second 375 I've had and its the closest thing to what I'm looking for except for the mag setup.

Might find something at numrich, but you will have to research if it will work.
Like a Rem 700, you can't go from mag to floor plate due to the receiver being modified.

Is typical that a detachable magazine has or is the feed rail lips. Some receivers had that as well - like many Mausers did. So if you want to swap out to standard fixed magazine or to a detach magazine - have to sort out how to deal with upper feed lip issues - might be there, might not be, on the receiver. Also, transition to fixed magazine needs a follower that will fit, and a magazine spring - those pieces from the detachable magazine might or might not work in the magazine well.

I am not sure if a "kit" is available for your rifle - you might consider to just mill or file one to your idea? There is fixed floor plates, there is blind magazines and there is hinged floor plates - might or might not work with the current detachable magazine release or latch that your rifle will have now. I do not have a Kodiak 85 to know what might be possible.

There is no kit for the Sako 85. If you don't want to remove the mag or are afraid of losing it, you can top load like a blind mag model and cycle to remove, having never to remove the mag. The Sako 85 mag is designed to never fall out on its own. Or trade the rifle and buy what you really want.

A call to Stoeger may be in order, if you are not getting the answers you want here. As we know from reading the threads here, some of the 85 models come with magazines, and some come with floorplates. A quick look at the catalogue would probably determine which models are which, and a quick call to Stoeger would determine if you could order parts or not, and if they would even work.
It's worth a shot?

I'm with you 100% on fixed vs detachable magazines and for probably the same reason--aesthetics. I had a custom Sauer 90, 9.3x64, with a detachable magazine (pic below), and I had an accomplished metalsmith attach a floorplate-like plate to the bottom of the magazine and shape and fit it up so that it looked just like a standard floorplate, sitting flat and tight against the magazine surround with none of the bulge, and gap around them, of most detachable magazines. It looked very nice and sealed off the bottom metal, yet was still detachable. So if you feel strongly about this and your concern is purely aesthetic, I think that this would be a pretty easy, and probably not too-costly, job on your Sako Kodiak with a stainless steel floorplate piece.

On the other hand, if your concern is less aesthetic and more practical--about the detachable magazine falling out on firing/recoil--you could work on the release mechanism tightening it up to make it almost impossible to release and load from the top as blargon suggests.

^ The Sako 85 mag system will never fall out on its own, as you have to lift up on the mag while pushing the button to release it.

I will see what Stoeger says, its not a deal breaker if I'm stuck with the detach. It actually looks pretty close to a hinged floor plate. If they have acess to a stainless bottle metal then I will buy it, hopefully it will match up to my rifle. Thanks for the suggestions.

I got an answer back from stoeger, they can sell me an internal box, spring and follower, fixed mag release and trigger guard but its from the deluxe model which is blued steel only. So it won't match the stainless on my kodiak model. So if anyone has a blued model that is looking to swap it out is in luck. I will wait and hope they come out with a stainless model that matches.
