I found a jar of very old but still malleable wood floor wax in a free box after a yard sale and I've been putting it on the butt stock and fore-end of my Remington 870 Express.
It works remarkable well and the cheap birch (or whatever "hardwood") is remarkably water resistant and the well preserved despite quite a few years of hard use.
