My remington 700 CDL in 35 Whelen has a nasty habit of dumping the contents of the magazine all over the bench when shooting off the bags. I dont know , but think it is recoiling enough to overcome the poor excuse of a latch they use on the junk bottom metal they build these things with. So first question - is there a cheap and easy fix for this other than duct tape?, second question- does any one make steel bottom metal for these rifles with the floorplate release on the other side of the triggerguard? the rifle is only a year old with 120 rounds through it and is a great shooter, Is this a common flaw?

Perhaps a stronger spring is in order......probably be your cheapest fix.....likely simplest too...
I also have a CDL in 35 Whelen, and I have never had the floorplate come open while shooting it on the bench or anywhere else. You may want to check and see if the latch is fully catching the floorplate. If not, you may have to put a thin shim [washer] under the bottom metal at the front and/or rear screw [between the metal and the wood]to move the floorplate and triggerguard away from the stock a tiny bit so the latch can fully extend and grip the floorplate.Regards, Eagleye.
How old is the gun? Did you just buy it? Consider sending it to Remington describing problem - they will likely fix it. You might be able to phone their service line as well and they can recommend a fix for it. Good luck either way.
Well guys , I just got back from the range this afternoon and the good news is its fixed , .036 under the back and .020 under the front seemed to fix it right up, both groups with the hornady 250's came in at under and inch and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their input and advice.
