Gentlemen,

What's the difference between a fluted and non-fluted guide rod on an M14? Is it strictly a weight issue or does it affect performance as well? If so, how?

Thanks for your time.

I have used both and compared the performance.

From what I have seen, the only difference is the weight, performance is identical. Both prevent bunching of the spring and both improve accuracy. In my experience, accuracy has been improved to the same degree with both guides but I will mention that some believe the full round guides to add slightly to accuracy.

Your mileage may vary, as they say. I believe its just a personal preference myself.

Maybe Hungry could arrange a range comparison at one of the clinics out East?

I could certainly arrange some range time in the Lower Mainland if people are curious.

Interesting info...

How about the spring itself? There's a Wolf spring I could pick up but I'm unsure if replacing the spring would be necessary as well. Any thoughts on that?

I believe all Canadian made spring guides are Norinco compatible. I do not personally know of any made here that are not, although I suppose thats possible. My suggestion is to ask the retailer you are buying from.

In any event, your Norc compatible spring guides will work with either USGI or Norc spec springs, although their will obviously be some extra room when using a USGI spring and Norc compatible guide.

FYI, I measured a Canadian produced match grade guide and found that the additional clearance amounted to .01"

It is the US ones that typically require a spring change as the US made spring guides are slightly larger in diameter and will not fit the original Norinco spring in your M305.

As to replacing your spring, I have never found it personally necessary, although I am sure some will tell you they found it desirable ... another YMMV thing.

Marketing.
Does nothing else except takes more time and some people enjoy the looks of it. Me personaly would rather have a lower cost than something that sounds cool.

As Gothmog said it makes no difference to function if its fluted, just looks cool and costs more to make.
Both the ones Myself " S&J hardware" and the ones Gothmog makes ' cant reammber the name of his company" are both unfluted and work with norincos or M1a guns.
we should make a list of all the canadian companies the make them.
