Using a fly on a spinning rig....

I haven't tried it yet but it does look promising and it lets you get out there with your casts while staying on shore. Anyone give it a go? Thinking it might be pretty good for the kids.........and maybe even myself on those windy days where fly fishing is a bust; for me anywhoo :)

Yeah, old trick. I saw reference to this in some 80's fishing books. You can also buy some clear floats that let you fill it part way up with water to aid casting distance. Also work will real bugs as well.

I have been doing this using the clear floats since the 1980's.

A Tom Thumb fly is the one I use the most.

Cast it out slowly retrieve, or troll it behind a boat works great.

I went fishing for striped bass on Lake Cumberland, Kentucky, two weeks ago. One of the lines was trolled waaaaaay behind the boat on a three-inch in red and white bobber set with a six inch bait 15 feet behind the bobber. It worked! The other lines were trolled deeper with one ounce weights.

Totally different from casting a fly with a bobber, but the principle is the same. :)

A lot of people around here use flies and a bobber for sea trout. It's set up a little different though. The bobber usually consists of about a three inch piece of wooden broom handle with an eye screwed in one end. That is attached to the swivel at the end of the line. The flies have 8-10" of line on them and are tied to the line 4-5 feet up from the bobber, there are usually 2-3 flies tied on a couple feet apart.

Works great for sea trout, think I'll stick to the fly rod myself though.

It works best with an adjusta-bubble.

I tried this years ago and while I'm sure it works, I found the fly tends to twist around the line above the bubble on casting. If you need to reach I suggest switching to an ultra light to light action rod. It will allow you to cast the smallest of lures properly without any added weight. I also can only offer one other piece of advice. If your trying to extend your reach from shore, get off of shore. You need to be on the water. If you don't have the ability to haul or store a boat, get a float tube. Anything to get you on the water and away from anyone else is all you need.

works for me too.... I'd consider asking for a fishing fourm..... but i think this is the very first fishing post I've seen
