What causes this? and how can it be fixed? Took the .243win Stevens out for a few rounds this weekend and the first shot of each 4 round test would fly! Cleaned gun before going out, let it cool down between rounds, checked the crown and barrel for obstructions, none visible. Is it just a characteristic of the gun? or am I just being to picky? The longest fly away was 10mm @ 100 yrds.

Thanks, Perry.

Not a strange occurence for the Stevens 200, and a few other more expensive rifles for that matter. Nothing that a bedding job won't fix. I've had the pleasure of bedding 2 Stevens with the same problem, both were fixed and now shoot scary tight groups, consistently. The nice thing of it is that the Stevens are very easy to bed nicely.

Most likely a bedding or free floating issue. Check the barrel for contact with the stock when cold. My thinking is that the first shot warms the barrel enough to either firm up a contact, or just as likely move the barrel away from it slightly.
If the barrel needs to be floated, a piece of dowelling wrapped with sandpaper is a cheap fix.
If the float doesn't work, you can always bed the action later.
