FMJ vs. Lead Bullets in 22cal Pistol

Hey guys,

I finally got my first restricted plinker (beretta U22 neos) and I was wondering why I don't see anyone shooting FMJ ammo through 22cal pistols at the range.

Am I going to shorten the life of the barrel or damage the barrel if I shoot FMJ ammo?

Thanks

As far as I know no one makes a jacketed 22 long rifle bullet. Do you mean the copper plated bullets? These work fine. It's almost impossible to "shoot out" a 22 rimfire barrel.

More likely he means copper wash bullets, the copper is only a few molecules thick. It's a chemical reaction in a copper rich solution instead of electro-plating as we understand it. It's difficult to plate 22 cal bullets and maintain the required tolerances.

I don't think anyone makes a jacketed 22 in the strict sense of the word, in that the lead is pressed into a metal jacket.

There are stories of folks shooting out a 22 barrel, but only after 100,000's of rounds. The copper wash does, however, minimize the barrel clean up after a shooting session.

I never clean a 22 rimfire barrel. OK, if it got soaked, or something like that.
I have often read, that unless one is extremely careful, the cleaning operation is much harder on the barrel than the shooting.
Has the ammunition changed, or for some other reason, should they now be cleaned?

I bought it from a fellow CGNer... Gun and red-dot..

It was a great deal..... I did just see one on here the other day...... Keep a close eye because the good deals go fast....

Thanks guys....

I didn't think I was doing any damage, I just don't understand why people are shooting lead only.

The federal jumbo packs are dirt cheap and I haven't had any problems with fedding in my 10/22 or beretta so far....

At the club we go through a lot of 22 LR ammo, we have a new shooters night every week and we've had as many as 30 plus out each firing 50 rounds.

We've tried various ammo to try and keep the costs down.

Cleaning depends on what ammo you shoot. If you shoot the Russian stuff, it is wax coated, not only does it smell, but it seems to clog up the grooves in the rifling as well as wax deposits around the breach, the extractor and firing pin.

The Mexican ammo, Aguila which the club used for a while, seems to be softer lead, and it clogs up the grooves as well.

Not too much problem with Federal Ammo in the bulk pack which we are using now.

You are right, you can damage the bore by improper cleaning. Ideally, you want to clean from the breach to the muzzle using a snake, so you don't damage the crown of the muzzle but on the club guns we do clean from the muzzle to the breach using a plastic jag and a cloth soaked in Nitro. We don't use brass or copper brushes in the barrel, just fabric brushes, then only if it is really bad. It seems like we have to clean every 3 or 4 months.

It does seem, however, that there is less lead build up with the copper wash ammo.

Ratzilla: where do you live- if in Ontario try Al Simmons gun shop- he usually has one or two in stock. Just be aware there are different versions of the NEOS, so be careful when comparing prices.

Probably because lead seems to be the most common type of .22lr round, at least that I've seen. More of a function of availability in different loads than anyone's personal preference for lead versus copper wash.

I'm from the west coast in Vancouver. I probably should put that in my profile.

There are different versions of the NEOs? I always thought that it was just the looks thats different between the INOX and regular one..am i wrong?

The gun can be customized using parts from Beretta.

Barrel- 4.5 inch, 6 inch, 7.5 inch, stainless or blued

DLX version which has an adjustable trigger travel and lighter pull than the plinking version, as well as thicker grips and thumb rest.

The NEOS web site used to list a whole bunch of other options.

copper washed bullets are pretty soft and won't harm the barrel at all...

I never shoot lead in my .22...Copper plated all the way
