As I suspected it was the extractor pivot pin protruding through the slide and hanging up on the cartridge guide.
A previous owner probably substituted a slightly longer pin for the original.
I had to put it in a vise and apply pressure slowly. After getting the slide off, I pushed the offending pin out and stoned it to proper length and cleaned up the scored underside of the slide.
It now functions as it should, although sometimes the sear doesn't engage when racking the slide by hand. A sticking sear maybe?
