I have recently aquired an FN-49 and can not identify the type of ammo for this rifle, is there any 1 out there that can help my find the correct ammunition for this firearm short of bringing it to a gun smith? From what i have researched it can be a few types but which 1? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanx

Does it have this crest on the fwd receiver ring:

If it does it is Egyptian and is chambered for 7.92x57 (8MM Mauser)

These have only been made in three calibres that I know about; 8mm Mauser (most common), 7mm Mauser (less common), and 30-06 (rare to begin with). If you post the markings, that'll lead you right to it.

Fn-49

Actually, the .30/'06 isn't too rare. I've had several over the years. The really scarce one is the Luxenbourg version in 7,65 Belgian Mauser. The same cartridge for the Argentine Mauser.

The Luxembourg rifles were .30-06. The 7.65's are from the Argentine contract.

The Belgian military adopted the FN-49 in .30-06, and the rifle was built in seven other different calibres, for a total of 11 different nations. Total production was 176,264 rifles. The production and distribution were as follows:
  • -6.5mm: 5 produced for testing
  • -7mm Mauser: 8,003 produced for Venezuela
  • -.30 M2 (.30-06): 125,072 produced for Belgium, Belgian Congo, Luxembourg, Indonesia, Colombia, and Brazil.
  • -7.5mm: 1 produced for testing
  • -7.62mm: 1 produced for testing
  • -7.65mm: 5,541 produced for Argentina
  • -7.92mm (8mm Mauser): 37,641 produced for Egypt and for British tests

The Argies modified some to 7.62 NATO.
Yup - these were tha last of the SAFN's that were surplussed - they were converted to .308 with a removable mag with FN supplied parts kits, and used by the Argie Navy only....and very nice!

allow me to quote from a reputable smith: A beautifully machined rifle it has a major failing that must be examined by a competent gunsmith; it has a tendancy to fire out of battery/partially unlocked.this is caused by the firing pin rebound spring weakening over time. When the action slams shut the firing pin continues forward, strikes the primer with enough force to fire the round before the action is totally locked. F.N. knew of this failing and added a firing pin retarding pawl in the later manufactured rifles (7-57mm and 30-06 rifles ussually have this feature, but all of the egyptian rifles are lacking this piece). The cure is simple; a small washer (about .060 in thickness) can be made to go between the firing pin flange and the rebound spring to increase spring resistance, and if neccesary the firing pin shortened slightly.

"...find the correct ammunition..." Start by slugging the bore. Hammer a cast .30 calibre bullet through the barrel and measure it with a micrometer. That'll give you calibre and bore diameter.
.30-06/.308 will measure .308". 8mm will be .323". 7mm will be .284". 7.65 Argentine will be .313". This doesn't help much, but it'll give you a place to start.
Posting every marking on it will help identify where it came from. A picture would be better though.
