FN-49 cycling issues.

Recently bought a Egyptian contract FN-49 overall condition is excellent but it has a problem where it will not cycle rounds properly. I've tried with a full mag and single loaded and they all get stuck like this. I'd really appreciate help figuring it out. I don't know what I could be doing wrong or if theres something broken with the gun.1768866382677.png
 
Looks like you have a broken firing pin that is sticking out. This is rather dfangerous and can result in slam fires. Do not attempt to shoot further until fixed.
I believe FN49 were originally produced with a 1 piece firing pin which caused this problem when it broke. You need to source a 2 piece firing pin and replace it
 
I suggest you disassemble the firing pin, look like its stuck. They came first with a 1 piece firing pin wich was prone to breakage. When that happen,the foward part of the pin may jam in the bolt. I had one egyptian contract but he had the upgraded 2 pieces firing pin. So disassemble and inspect.
 
Isn't that a common issue with the FN49?

I know of several cases where the rifle (FN 49) fired out of battery, you wouldn't like this to happen, it's quite nasty.

Just took it apart. It was a one piece firing pin but you're right its broken.

When replacing the firing pin with a two piece version, make sure it has a very strong firing pin spring or you might still have slam fires. Also note that the Egyptian one is the only version without a firing pin safety lock, that means that the firing pin can come forward without the action being locked and in battery.
Give the gun and especially the chamber and the gas system a very good cleaning, if the chamber is not mirror smooth it will have extraction problems.

There are several variations of firing pin. One piece, one piece with firing pin safety stop, two piece, and two piece with firing pin safety stop. The Egyptian contract bolts do not as far as I recall have a firing pin safety stop so just a plain two piece pin is what you need.

The 8 mm were Egypians, they decided they did not need a firing pin safety lock.
A good book to read on this subject is " The rifle that ran out of time", about how devellopment was already started before the war by Mr. Saive and how he finished it after the war.
And of course he was the one that designed the FN FAL , which has a lot of the FN49 features as well.
 

A two piece firing pin is a must.
I also found the shoulder on the firing pin could wedge and hold itself forward, though unlikely to cause something I changed it's shape a bit anyway.
Have yet to fix the excessive over gassing.
