Just got my FN-49 in 8mm. First I striped it down and cleaned it and man was the gas plug and piston dirty!

First question is how does everyone store there FN, bolt open or closed? I dont like dry fireing it and havent found and trick to close the bolt and keep it uncocked.

Second is on the egyptian models what is the brass disc on the butt for? And how was it held on? Mine has a robertson screw which I will assume is really really not correct.

How hard is it to find handgaurds? My front one has cracked and has field repairs. Sort of neat to see how they fixed it but a replacement might still be nice.

Also does anyone reload for these? What sort of rounds do they seem to consume best?

Storing it closed and uncocked allows the pressure on the springs to be released. Dry firing is the only way to do this. Don't worry about doing it when handling or putting it away.

The butt disk would have been for unit markings. Mine has a slotted screw, IIRC.

I'm shooting Romanian surplus in mine right now. Nice stuff, if you can find some.
 
Alright I wasn't sure about the dry fireing issue.

Is it common for some of the brass discs to be unmarked? And is the screw brass as well?

Any specs on how much powder is in the romanian ammo?

My disk is unmarked. I'm not sure why the Egyptian rifles even had the disks. The practice of using unit marked disks went out of favour long before these rifles were built. They gave the enemy valuable info if captured. I'd have to check to see what the screw is made of.

No idea on the powder charge. It is a light ball, 154 gr. bullet, lacquered steel case.
 
The hand guards on mine are replacements, and fit poorly. I ordered two new ones from Sarco (Numrich was sold out), and the front guard I received is badly warped, and the wood is also pretty beat up.

So, the parts you need are out there, but good luck finding something better than what you already have.

I'll be calling Sarco next week, and asking them if they can "hand select" a front guard, but I'm not holding my breath.

The screw is brass on mine. Check the MKB for photos of my FN49.
 
Those pictures where helpful, now I need to go screw hunting so I can loose the robertson. Plus I need to replace a missing stopscrew as well. Whas the issue with the 30.06 stocks that some of the places have for sale. Are they that different from the 8mm?

I'd still like to iron out some ncie hand loads to really see how well it shoots.

But some surplus ammo would be great for plinking with. Where is everyone finding the stuff? And better yet anywhere in Alberta?

The problem is that the 8mm surplus you would find is corrosive. I don't want to put that through my SAFN49 so I have been buying commercial ammo and saving the brass for reloading.

Don't be scared of the corrosive surplus. It takes me less than 10 minutes to clean my FN-49 completely.
