I was offered one on a trade and know nothing about them.Could you help me?
1--Weight
2--balance
3--How do they function?
4--Can a scope be mounted?
THANK YOU
Sean

Just makes sure that if you mount a scope that you don't change anything on the rifle.

Ie: Drill 'n Tap

Don't want us milsurpers showing up on your front porch at 2am with torches and pitchforks do you now?

The easily-scoped versions have a dovetail on the left receiver side - they are a bit on the heavy side, but are a decent blaster! The more common versions are the Egyptian issue in 8mm Mauser - less common are the 30-06 and 7mm, but the nicest are the recent Argentinian 308 with removable mag.

I have an Egyptian 8mm SAFN49. These weigh about 10 lbs., balance is fairly good, gas system is like the SKS except longer! :) These rifles were not made to be scoped as a general idea but you may find one with the proper dovetail on the left receiver side.

And as soldier506 stated, these are as close as you will get to a FN-FAL without being grandfathered. The SAFN49 was the predecessor. Beautiful machining on these rifles as well.

Buy one!
:D

Any ideas on where to get parts, especially for the Egyptian version? I picked up a beauty from a board member a while back, but the handguards are a wee bit loose, and I'd like to replace them.

Numrich/E-gun parts has a selection of FN49 parts.

Stick a 'h' in front of the ttp and you're set to go. Excellent company to deal with. Or you can try these people. I haven't dealt with them yet.

Good luck, the parts are out there especially for the 8mm Egyptian model.

Sarco are hard to deal with, I have dealt with them twice and both time's they seem to have forgoten my order. Waited a month and contacted them for info on my order and they had no knowledge of it. It happen both times; they don't seem to eager to give service to canadians. I must mention that I sent my orders by fax. Once I contacted them by telephone, the orders came in. My two cents worth.

I finally ordered a new 8mm barrel for my Egyptian FN49 and the other night I went to the shop and did the swap.
The original barrel had a heck of a crush fit to the receiver, I had to mill the shoulder of the barrel to relieve the pressure and it came off with little trouble.
With a 3 foot cheater bar I had the new barrel properly indexed. The barrel amazingly headspaced with the original locking shoulder !
I will be taking it to the range next week and see how it shoots. I will pick up some factory hunting ammo and test that along side the surplus stuff I have.

The only one I know that is for sale in Canada right now is the one at Collector's Source.

Shows handling, overall G-VG, Bore VG, 8mm Mauser, with bayonet Egyptian marked.

For 950$ though.

1--Weight
9lbs+ when loaded.

2--balance
Excellent for a battle rifle of this heft.

3--How do they function?
Mine is flawless and smooth as silk.

4--Can a scope be mounted?
Some models were machined for sniper use, they can be identified by a dove tail slot milled in the left side of the receiver (which mine does not have). Sadly the two pieces that make up the original scope mount are VERY hard to come by.

They are excellent, high quality rifles. I love mine and will NEVER part with it.:)

ask and you shall receive

Just a bit of trivia about Belgian .30-06 versions. Some of them were selective fire. If there is a slot in the stock just above the trigger on the left side, and if there is an "A" stamped on the left side of the trigger guard, the rifle is a dreaded CA. I have only ever seen one, but they are out there.

Isn't the FN49 a fixed mag, well not fixed but meant to be like the Enfield?

The FN49 is pretty much fixed, as the feed lips are on the reciver meaning if you removed the magazine all the bullets will come falling out.

The execption to this is the the rifles the Argentinian Navy converted to 308 as thouse were modified to work with detachable magazines.

I'll get a picture to post in the next couple of hours to show you.
