I have a family relic that I need to get the serial number off of. Above the loading port I have a number that is out of Browning's serial number range that appears as 2 lines with the first is a "1" then a second row at 6 digit characterset. On the Barrel ring I have the same 6 digit character set. On the bottom of the Barrel where it meets the Receiver I have what should be a valid serial number that follows Browning's table.

SO to recap I have a number above the loading port that almost matches the number on the barrel ring and I have what is a valid period number.

Are the numbers above the loading port and on the barrel ring identifying a set? and is the Serial the number on the bottom of the barrel?

Loading Port: 1456### <-- Too long for the barrel ring space and invalid Serial
Barrel Ring: 456###
Under Barrel: G### <-- Puts this at a 1956 Light.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

is the gun actually stamped browning anywhere? i believe the A5 was also sold directly under FN's name in Europe, and those guns would probably be numbered different from ones produced for Browning. The Number forward of the loading port should be the serial number, sold under Brownings name or not.

The right side of the receiver has a scroll work and "BROWNING" but the barrel has "FN" markings and text. I've contacted both Browning and F.N. without getting any response yet. I know from family history it was purchased in the late 50's and has had no replacement parts to date.

It seems fairly resonable that the loading port numbers and the barrel lug would be a set as they are so close.

Thanks for any response.
