FN Browning Mauser 98 Custom Ideas Needed!

Steyr,

My 375 has a Pac Nor, #4 contour barrel to it (#1 being the lightest). I chose that profile due to my wanting this to firstly be a hunting rifle, but also to add a bit of weight to the rifle as well. With the stock, action, and optics, the rifle weighs in at just under 10lbs. Makes it easy enough to carry, but also comfy to shoot.

Ooooooo, I know where one is and when I am a good boy I even get to hold it sometimes. WISH HE'D USE IT!

Guess what I was shooting this weekend Noel ;)

I guess the load development has been done for a year and I didn't even know it  :D. I was even going to put it back on the market last week.

I had Bill Leeper turn my 30-06 browning into a 416 taylor, used all the factory parts except the barrel. It functions perfect and shoots great.
It was in realy tough shape but now looks like a custom rifle.

small- 6mm Rem,257Roberts
medium- 256 Newton, 6.5/06 270, 7x57, 280, 30/06
heavy medium-338/06, 338, 35 Whelen, 358 Norma, 375 Chatfield Taylor, 375 Ruger
heavy, 416 Taylor, 458 Winchester.
You will notice I don't recommend any of the full length magnums. This is because I don't like the weakening of the action which takes place in opening the FN up to take these long cartridges. Before anyone responds, I don't care how many have been done before or who did them (and that includes me!). I've seen H&H chambered rifles from FN, Ferlach, and numerous well known custom makers which had set back so I don't like it. Regards, Bill

I agree, use a proper magnum action like a CZ instead of modifying the standard length FN if you want to go the full-length magnum route. Besides being better suited to handling the .375 length cartridges, the magazine box is also scaled up to handle a full five rounds. I think this is a nice feature to have on a stopping rifle.

I was looking at the donor firearm today, and really want to get this project under way. I am leaning more and more towards the 9.3x62, but have always had a desire for the .35 Whelen. The .416 Taylor and .458 Win are also on the short list.

Once I narrow down the caliber, I can order a barrel (more than likely a Krieger) and make some serious progress!

I have one of those JC's sitting in the gun cupboard waiting for me to do something with it, mag bolt face, I believe it's a C action rather then a D, but I haven't looked at it in a while. I would like to do a 300 H&H on it, but if it's only a C, I will probably go with a regular length mag instead. Probably another 7 or a 264, I suppose. Maybe a 257. - dan
