I was thinking back the other day about my brief time in the Cdn military and the rifle we used the FN C1 and was thinking about trying to find one to buy.

Did some quick queries online and they seem to be pretty rare.
Can anyone point me in the right direction and give me an idea about price?

Also does anyone know whether the C1 is Restricted or Prohibited? I could see the C2 being prohibited since it was full auto but I'm not sure about the C1. If it is prohibited can it be modified?

Cheers

For one thing, almost every C1 was converted to C1A1 status, so original C1s are about as plentiful as teeth on a turkey farm. The ones we kept as a War Reserve have all been destroyed, thanks to the UN and the Liberals.

It really should be unrestricted in any way, being just a semi-auto rifle, even if PAID FOR by the Canadian People.

Problem is that we live in Canada, a land in which the paranoia of the week decides what is legal and what is not.

It is, therefore, not just Restricted but Prohibited. If you did not have one registered in your name when they were prohibited, you may never have one.

That is how Canada thanks you for your years of Service.

In Switzerland, they give you the rifle to keep.

If you are lucky enough to have the right license (I'm not) then the annual gun show in Chilliwack usually has lots.

The FN C1A1 was a heavy rifle and got heavier as the day(s) wore on. I hated the damn thing but now I want one because the government says I can't.

Deact or nothing guy, sad but true. :(

Even if you had a live one, you can't shoot it anyway, they are safe queens. Lo these many years, they won't issue a SAP to transport them to a range.

X2!
When I first encountered the C1A1, I was a skinny 17-year-old high school kid in the army reserve. Yes I hated it too and yes, I'd buy one if I could!

She was always my favourite. When I picked her up and held her close I knew I had some real fire power. Maybe we'll meet again someday...

The C1A1 was an excellent piece of kit that rarely failed and was accurate enough for Fig 12's out to 500 yds. Oh, but I'm dating myself.....................

James B Julia sold a 1L series C1A1 for $17,250.00 in Oct 2010.

**FN/FAL MARKED CAL 1957 (C&R). SN 1L8940. Cal. .308. 24-1/2” bbl. Manufactured by Fabrique Nationale. Small “IS/R59in a circle)”. Left side of receiver has “RIFLE. 7.62 mm FN(C1)”. Includes magazine and web sling. Magazine fits well in the mag well and gun looks all vintage. Carrying handle is of hard plastic. Appears fully functional, firing mechanism operates smoothly when cycled by hand. Parts seem correct and orig to the gun. PROVENANCE: A. William Vallerand Collection. CONDITION: Overall finish and appearance is very fine, the receiver and bbl retaining 90%+ of its orig gray-blue finish. There are some brassing to the high points. Wood is a very nice, deep, rich brown with the slightest of handling marks throughout. Forearm shows a couple of dings and one gouge on the left side. Really a fine condition gun in sound and serviceable condition. Bbl is excellent, shiny and bright. The quality of the bluing makes this specimen extremely fine and desirable. 4-39870 JWK202 (14,000-18,000)

REVISED: 9/22/2010 ~ CORRECTION: This C 1 variation of the FAL was manufactured under license in a Canadian Arsenal factory and not by Fabrique Nationale as stated in the catalog.

I'll show my age too. I had a rifle association FN C1A1 issued to me as a kid (less than 18yrs old, and long before the old FAC age requirements).

The C1 "can" be made to fire full auto. The modification is simple, biodegradeable, and nonpermanent, but usually shared only among friends over beers. I will not repeat it on the interweb. So, yes the C2 has the S R and A option on the 'Change Lever' and the appropriate one internal part. But the C1 can fire 0 to 20 rounds, without the benefit of the extra counterbalancing weight.

A little out of my price range even if I could legally own one :(.

I was talking to a retired US Marine while I was in NY two weeks ago, he told me about the time when his battalion would go over to CFB Petawawa and conduct wargames with CF soldiers during the 80's.

He stated how much they loved the Canadian "FAL" rifle, and that all of them in the Marines would rather have it because they simply hated their own M14!

I replied, thats kinda funny because back then most CF soldiers hated the FN-FAL, and now theres a lot of Canadian gun owners who love the M14!

Ironic isnt it :D
