FN C1A1 breech block

# 6 as circled in red was not for headspacing, that was a visual alignment gauge for lining up a barrel on a receiver. There was a general gauge used to test headspace on all the rifles, it insured interchangeability of the breach blocks from rifle to rifle and gave one an idea of which locking shoulder to install. "Normal" headspace gauges where used to ensure headspace was within the "Go", "No-go" range.

I got my illustrations vs descriptions mixed. I think these are what you are looking for.

That's cool. Interestingly, we never used the guages in 7 and 6. The only guage for headspace we used was #5. As mentioned in several previous postes, you never had the same breech block twice. The #5 guage measured from the shoulder in the chamber to the locking shoulder. If that passed, that was as far as it went. It's been almost 40 years now but do not recall ever using the guages #6 and 7. Any thoughts from the X armourers?
I also do not recall the extractor compressing tool.

So. I stand corrected. I got hold of my brother who was an armourer for over 25 years. He used both guage sets. I was reminded that I probably had the things in my tool box but for the life of my I can't remember. I know when we did unit insections we never used them. Just the big interchang gauge.

I kind of collect the tools for the various CF small arms. Of the tools shown on that page, I have nos 1,2,3,8,9,10,11 and 12. I have just about given up on ever finding no 5 along with those others, but the search continues.

From plate K shown earlier I only have the two mag forming mandrels (items 13 and 14). I do not expect to find the others.

hey R , I collect tools too.

on plate J , I have 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,11 (not in pic) , im missing 5 and 12 .

They were all kept in one box and separated from the rifles. Makes you wonder how the Terrs could get both. Considering the rifles were and are kept in a 'two person required to open', alarmed, vault. Breech blocks in a locking file cabinet in another ARMOURY room that was also locked.
C1A1's had self-adjusting headspace. No idea how. Never had time to find out, but the breech blocks were interchangeable.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! thats a good one

most of the stretch in an FAL happens in the receiver, so gauge 5 would be great for most armourers and the breech block no doubt had a much more rare set of gauges (or maybe only used at the factory?) to ensure they were withing the length spec to make this work?

by this stage, i would borrow a set of regular gauges at check both breech blocks for my own piece of mind, if i ever thought it would be fired again, who knows if it had a few hot loads through it since it left service (of 20-30 years of regular rounds through it)

Just for an FYI. My brother was involved with the final inspections of the FNs when they were being put into war reserve. A lot of them, especialy the older ones, had stress cracks around the locking shoulder. They were toast. These rifles had seen long and hard use.
