I recently came across the "Holy Grail" of rare FN C1A1 accessories, the C1 Sniper Scope complete with Body Cover Mount and Protective Steel Storage and Transit Canister. There were only 305 of these "Sniper Scopes" ordered for the entire fleet of 90K(+) C1A1 rifles and most of the Body Cover Mounts were destroyed when the war stock of rifles were sent to the smelter. It is rare to locate a Scope Tube itself, but quite unusual to come across a complete set IAW the equipment checklist. This set even features the See-Through Scope Caps, which were often damaged or lost. All things considered this Excellent condition set easily rates the "Holy Grail" descriptor!

The C1 Sniper Scopes are a 4x Optic with a German-style Upright Post and dashed Horizontal Stadia Line. The Optic Tubes were manufactured by Leitz Canada with the Body Cover Mounts fabricated by a combination of Leitz and Canadian Arsenals Limited. Post-Korean War, Snipers within the Canadian Army were employed much as a Designated Marksman might be tasked today, with prioritized engagements out to a very optimistic 1000 metres. A more realistic engagement range would be 600m, in keeping with the limitations of the 4x magnification and the inherent inaccuracies of the FN C1A1 Rifle due to loose tolerances between the Body Cover and the Receiver Rails.

Here are some more photos of the Rifle fitted with the C1 Sniper Scope. Note the Catch on the Left Side of the Body Cover Mount which is used to attach and detach the Scope. When mounted the C1 Sniper Scope is held securely in the mount under stiff spring tension, with zero slop. It is a simple yet elegant and very secure mounting system.

The Storage and Transit Canister contains the complete contents consisting of the Equipment Checklist, a Protective Cover for the Body Cover Mount, a Screwdriver for slipping the Windage and Elevation Scales once zeroed, and a Cleaning Cloth. These items are cleverly retained within the Canister by a series of sheet steel channels tack-welded to the interior

When the Optic is not needed for "Sniping" it can be detached from the Body Cover Mount and kept protected within the Storage and Transit Canister. The Body Cover Mount is intended to remain on the Rifle, with the Mount interface protected from damage by a Steel Protective Cover that mounts the exact same way as the C1 Sniper Scope. Here the Scope is being remove from the Body Cover Mount. In the following photo you can see the Protective Cover installed on the top of the Body Cover Mount in place of the C1 Sniper Scope. Note that you can still use the Rear Folding Disc Sight (of the Aperture Type) with the special Body Cover Mount in place.

I had a complete set just like this one .I will try to find few pictures and share it. I remember sending it to Leitz for cleaning and they did it for free.

Interesting. How are the elevation and windage adjustment made? It looks a little bit like the forerunner of the Elcan scope, but that one has the adjustments in the scope base.

Interesting. How are the elevation and windage adjustment made? It looks a little bit like the forerunner of the Elcan scope, but that one has the adjustments in the scope base.

Windage is adjusted by turning the Knurled Front End of the Scope Body. The entire Front portion of the Scope twists forward of the Grey metal ring. The Grey ring around the Front End of the Scope Body is the Windage Scale, which can be slipped back to "zero" once the Windage has been zeroed. The Scale has marked adjustments for Zero to 15 degrees, Left or Right of the Scope's centre-line.

Elevation is adjusted by turning the Knurled Rear End of the Scope Body. The entire Rear portion of the Scope twists to make the adjustments. Again, the Grey-coloured metal Ring around the Rear of the Scope Body is the Elevation scale, marked in 100m increments from 100m to 1000m. The Scale can be slipped to "1" for 100m Engagement Range once the Elevation adjustment has first been zeroed. The scale can then be used to adjust the scope to compensate for Bullet-drop at 100m, 200m, 300m, etc all the way to 1000m (in 100m increments).

The method of adjusting the C1 Sniper Scope is very similar to the earlier and exceedingly rare Delft-manufactured Optic which was designed for the AR-10 Sniper Rifle. It also adjusted Windage by twisting the front of the Scope Body and Elevation by twisting the rear of the Scope Body. Very simple and easy to operate!
