Hi Guys does anyone know what a FN C3 is? Is it prohibited restricted ? Is there any other designations? I was offered one but I need more info first so what would I ask?

Let's puzzle this out - an FN or a C3? Two different firearms. And, FN didn't make the C3 sniper rifle. So what were you offered - a bolt action or a semi auto?
 
In the 1950s the Sniper school at Camp Borden did trials on the FN as a sniper rifle. The trigger pull could not be adjusted to give crisp pull and the use of the sling on the barrel mounted swivel gave changes in zero depending on whether the sling was used or not. The instructor staff NCOs recommended mods but they were disallowed by the school commander.
As an alternative the staff recommended the purchase of a bolt action sniper rifle (Winchester model 70). This to was disallowed. The No4Ts were withdrawn and the Army had no sniper rifle for the next 20 years.
 
It's not that there wasn't any sniper rifle. It's more that there was an inadequate sniper rifle as they used the C1 (A1) with the C1 sniper scope and C2 mount.

There was a two stage trigger made by C.A.L. but for some reason it wasn't adopted.
 
I have never met a serviceman in the Army who ever saw a C1 with the Leitz scope on issue outside of the ones that were used in the trials at Borden.
 
Someone must have seen one.

I have Cdn Army EME Manual C820, Issue 3 dated 30 Mar 1962 with pictures of the scope and its EIS as well as a description of the parts and how to adjust the scope.
 
A retired armourer told me that he never saw one of the C1 scopes on issue to the infantry units that he serviced but he did know of their existence.
 
There were supposed to have been around 1000 made. So made for whom is the question I guess.

Would anyone be surprised to find out the army/govt ordered some kit then promptly shelved it?
 
Leitz C1 Elcan scope For The FN C1

I have seen these before used at Connaught Ranges in the 1975 CFSAC meet, they were mounted on the C2 A1's for the LMG part of the competition, i was on the reserve Praire Area Team and we had at least two guns set up this way, possibly three drawn from arty stores at CFB Shilo, time has faded my memory, these scopes were occasionally held in recce platoons in infantry battalions and seldom used ,at least as i recall, i did see them on some other occasions at 1 CMBG dog and pony show displays for the public at CFB Calgary in the very early 70's when i was in cadets. Had the opportunity to pick one up several years ago, not the best mount,but an improvement over other NATO mounting systems for their FALs a nice piece of collectible Canadian militaria and looks awsome on my C1A!. g2
 
I remember some guys that had scopes for their FNC1's when I was attached to 2CDO during the 76 Olympics. I don't know if thats what your talking about in this post. They carried them in a round thermos type container when they didn't have them on the FN.
 
C1 Leitz Scope

Yes thats the one,the scope in a can . Believe there was a thread on these around a year ago on this site with photos , they have shown up on E Bay several times but yes i do recall the QRF force from 2 Cdo at St. Jean during the 76 Olympics had a couple .Don't recall if they were issued to the #2 man in the sniper teams or if they had made up some additional teams with the C1 scopes supplementing the C3s. There was a gentleman from Edmonton down at the Calgary winter gun show about 2 years ago had one for sale and claimed to have another 5 or 6 for sale at a $1000.00 a pop. g2.
