alright guys.
im faced with a tough choice ..

i recently bought a savage bolt gun.. its all good but its not me, so its being sold on and im faced with a choice .. FAL vs M14

could you guys make your choice on what you think is the best all round rifle of the 2 . feel free to give reasons aswell, i dont know alot about the FAL but i've always liked them

The fact that you can legally OWN an FAL means that you suck.. LOL :D:D

FN's are near and dear to my heart. That's what I'd buy..... If I was allowed to own one....... :jerkit:

That being said, the M14 I think is a tougher all round rifle. FN's tend to be more "fiddly".

How about a Norinco FAL clone that would be internally different enough to not be considered a "Variant" by the authorities? CanAm / Marstar you listening?

As a non 12.x'r I'd take that route over an M-14/m305

they were our service rifle up until the mid 80's i think .. so there are parts available for them, most gunsmiths know the rifle backwards. nz has a minimal market for aftermarket and 3rd party parts for guns.. even m14 accessories arent easy to come by .. but a quadrail forearm, and railed upper are pretty easy to find for the FAL here.
not that i would tactcial it up.. its going to have OD green synthetic furnature and im going to restore some original wood bits for its sunday best

mags... take your pick.. 5, 7, 10, 20 and 30 rounds .. of course legally i can only use the 5 and 7 rnd mags.. but no license is needed to buy the higher cap mags. and we done really have rangers here so its easy to get away with a 20 or 30 for shooting mobs of goats

Man, your laws are more screwed up than ours, if that is even possible. Lets see, I have 3 M-14's and 4 FN's. The M-14 is far more accurate but requires a lot more work to keep it that way. Either one was only required to group 6" at 100m to be issued to the troops. Since you had FN's in your government inventory, I'd vote for them! Parts will be come available eventually unless they destroyed all the spares!

The M-14 is more accurate and nicer to carry than the FN. Only those who've never held one or better yet had to carry the bloody thing for more than an hour like them. I have fond memories but that doesn't cloud my judgment, I've never gotten a sore cheek from the M-14 series but that FN, well let me tell you.....!

I've had both and I prefer the M14. I find it easier to shoot accurately and really like the simplified 1 moa windage & elevation adjustments. It also feels nice in the hands. The FN is certainly cool looking with its pistol grip. The carry handle is a great idea as well. I never did have a scope on my FAL, but having one on one of my M14's makes me like it even better and have more confidence in its accuracy. I also like the great amount of information I now have available here on the net to help me with the M14's. Back when I had the FAL, about all I could find was a standard issue set of instructions.

Voted FN.

I have an L1A1 and an M14 (ca) that can't leave the house so they are both hobbled equally. I just like the feel of the FN, and the feeling I get when I have my hands on it.

Having just bought a couple of Norinco M14s, the idea of a commercially available non-restricted Norinco-Nearly-FN gives me a physical state normally reserved for other activities.

These things suck. You couldn't pay me to buy one. :D

I voted M-14.
